On September 5th and 6th the island of Barbuda was decimated by Hurricane Irma. Ninety-five percent of the structures on the island were destroyed or significantly damaged. All of the 1,800 residents have been evacuated to the sister island of Antigua. Assessments are being conducted to determine which homes and businesses can be repaired or need to be rebuilt. In the meantime the residents of Barbuda will be living on the Antigua. Barbuda’s 600 students will be attending schools in Antigua as well. The needs are great.

The New Africa Cultural Center, Inc. is the local nonprofit entity from which the ROC Barbuda Relief is being launched. We are asking Rochester and Monroe County’s residents to contribute whatever you can, in cash or in kind, to assist. People wishing to make financial contributions should makes checks or money orders payable to “New Africa Cultural Center” or “NACC” with “ROC Barbuda Relief” on the comment/memo line. Monetary contributions will be used towards the rebuilding of the elementary school on Barbuda. Checks should be mailed to:

ROC Barbuda Relief
60 Heritage Circle
Rochester, NY 14615

Electronic contributions can be done via our website at www.ROCBarbudaRelief.com.

The Rochester sponsors of this initiative are:

New Africa Cultural Center, The Black Agenda Group, WDKX, Panther Graphics and the Minority Reporter
