ARTWalk is Western NY’s only outdoor museum, urban art trail and presenting organization. Our mission is “to strengthen, connect and unify the community through increased engagement with and support of the visual and performing arts.” Our programs serve to raise community awareness of ARTWalk and our mission; to showcase the arts; to build community among diverse groups/neighborhoods; to raise awareness of the high concentration of arts & cultural assets in the Rochester, NY area; and to have an arts festival encouraging community participation, rather than simply the commerce of art. ARTWalk began in 1999 with a $100,000 grant from Rochester City Council, started programming in 2000, and was officially chartered as a museum in 2002. We connect 6 blocks of arts/cultural institutions, restaurants, shops, and galleries in an area that comprises the Neighborhood of the Arts (NOTA) in the cultural center of Rochester. ARTWalk plans, delivers and promotes engaging outdoor arts, arts education, and cultural programs (dance, music, word, design, visual arts), and attracts audiences into the city and NOTA from the 5-county Rochester metro area. Programs include community-generated functional art (e.g. sidewalk imprints, sculptures, benches, artistic bus shelters, light pole mosaics), presenting programs with visual artists, dancers/dance companies, musicians, poets, music ensembles, and arts activities for the public, and arts ed. summer youth programs. ARTWalk will double in size BY 2010, with plans to quadruple by 2014.
