Xena is a five-year-old female, Mexican red-knee tarantula, and has called JMDC her home for three years. She gets her name from the 1990’s television series Xena: Warrior Princess. The Emperor Scorpion is a species of scorpion native to rainforests and savannas in West Africa. It is one of the largest scorpion species in the world, with adults reaching lengths of up to 8 inches and they can live for 6–8 years.

Sunday, February 5th, 2023 was "Free Museum Day". Museums around SoCal and the country did not charge general admission fees to enter museums. Public did pay to park or paid for extra activities, but no general admission fees.
Some pictures of visitors today and the grounds. Everything is green and overgrown with weeds. It looks wild and wonderful. We enjoy the wild look while it lasts.

Happy Wednesday!
Meet Pickles, a Veiled Chameleon. The veiled chameleon gets its name from the bony protrusion atop its head, which is called a casque. Both males and females sport the fancy headgear, which serves to channel water droplets down into the reptiles’ mouths, a crucial adaptation in their dry habitats.
Solitary tree-dwellers native to Saudi Arabia and Yemen, veiled chameleons—also called cone-headed chameleons—are mostly insectivores, ambushing prey with long, sticky tongues.

Meet Sebastian, a Madagascar Reticulated Giant Water Skink. These water skinks are native to Madagascar and they live on the waters edge of marshes and slow moving rivers and streams. They love to tunnel through mud and walk through shallow water. Sebastian is an insectivore, and enjoys eating a variety of insects.

Scorpions fluoresce under ultraviolet light a blue, blue-green, or a green color depending on species. This is one of our two female Emperor Scorpions walking around under an ultraviolet light. This species of Scorpion has a mild venom similar to a bee sting. Small hairs on the pedipalps (pinchers) and legs sense vibration in the air that help a Scorpion to find a delicious insect meal. Toby wanted to say Hi! Toby is a Reticulated Python, also called a Retic. He is also a morph called a Motley Marble Goldchild and was bred for these unique colors not found in nature. As a morph, Toby is expected to grow to be about 15' in length. Retics are a species of python found in Southeast Asia. Like all pythons, they are non-venomous constrictors, meaning they squeeze their prey until the heart stops and swallow the prey item whole. Adult Retics are one of the largest snakes alive with a few measuring over 30 ' in length and weighing several hundred pounds.
