Smith Mill Smith Mill

Smith Mill is constructed with components I removed from a Newport Pa. mill and from several other mills from a number of different states over the last 25 years. The Newport mill was built just after the civil war and operated until about 1946.I purchased the contents of the derelict building in 1986. The water wheel was in such bad condition that I rebuilt it 38 inches wide instead of 60 inches,it is 18 feet in diameter. The original brick and stone building no longer exists. Smith mill is in existence only to show people in my area what a mill of that period might have looked like. I believe the wheel is the largest in the state of Illinois . We have added A couple of rooms onto the Mill that house the "SMITHSONLYONE" a mini museum of tools and farm equipment A new Building on site is the Smith Mill Forge. It is an operable Blacksmith shop Future plans call for 2 separate buildings a millers house and a display of Sparton products and history.

To all Smith mill and Sparton friends. I had a young lady ask if a calculator I had on display in the Sparton room was a Typewriter . So I am looking for a donation of an office model not a portable model, that would have been used in the 60's to put in the Sparton room. I would like for it to look good does not need to work, Thanks, It could look something like this picture

Hello Friends and Family!
This has been an eventful year so as a treat to ourselves we took a tour of Alaska!! This June 22nd was our twenty year wedding anniversary! Can you believe it? There was always a bus to take us where we needed to go (Marlene liked that!). We took the glass domed train to Denali from Anchorage which moves very slow and takes all day. We saw tons of animals, moose, caribou, bears, dall sheep, a black wolf, and tons of different birds in Denali. Our trip back to Anchorage had different stops along the way. In Seward we went out for a cruise on a day ship. We saw a sea otter eating a crab leg, Orca whales, humpback whales, sea lions, and of course a lot more birds. While there we got to visit with some of Bob’s friends from his Air Force days there, Floyd and Laura Hunter. Marlene had heard so much about them over the years that it was an honor to meet them!
Our granddaughters, Emma and Grace, are becoming quite the young ladies! They are seniors this year and both have after school jobs and are very active in their school events. Emma had an excellent year in volleyball winning three different plagues for her hard work. Grace was voted Prom Princess at their prom this year. Both have college plans in process and have been accepted to the colleges of their choice!! Needless to say that we are so proud of them!!
The 2017 Elliott reunion was hosted at our home and Smith Mill. Bob was not the oldest family member present if only a short time! We don’t normally have cousins from Montana and Idaho here but were blessed with them this year! Good times!
Our open house was another success this year having around 400 here the second weekend of October. We are so thankful for all our volunteers that we have so that we can do this!
We attended Thanksgiving for the Smith family which was hosted by Sara Smith, Jimmy's daughter. Bob's nephew Alan and his wife Jill and baby Alex and niece Kelly and husband Todd with daughters Elizabeth and Emily were present with the three latest next generation. It was great to have babies there!
We hope this finds you all doing well! We are in decent shape and keep plugging along. It has been a good year! We wish you all a wonderful Merry Christmas and a fun and healthy New Year!!!

Its with sadness and a bit of anger to report that someone stole a small item from one of our displays, This happened at our 2017 Smith Mill open house. We have had over 5500 visitors at Smith Mill but this is the first time I know of anything being stolen. The item had very low value and can be replaced but the idea that someone would steal from future visitors is unacceptable.
