A new project called If This Bluff Could Talk, in partnership with Live Healthy Red Wing, the Goodhue County Historical Society, and the Prairie Island Indian Community, is gathering multiple stories about the bluff to incorporate into an artistic piece as part of the improvements at the base of the bluff later this year.

Did you know that Goodhue County hosted a national sports tournament not once, but twice?

This sign from the "Snus Box Trail" was used to advertise the 1928 and 1936 National Ski Tournaments that were held in Red Wing. The marketing campaign was clearly effective as thousands of people attended both events!

It and 149 other objects and images will be on display in the History Center's upcoming exhibit "Celebrating the Society: 150 Years at GCHS," opening May 31st. Mark you calendars!

History Break: Women of the Civil War
April 17 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Women of the Civil War – Presented by Vickie Wendel

The War Between the States may have been fought by great armies of men, but women filled many vital roles in society and even in the military. Women such as Clara Barton and Dorothea Dix immediately come to mind, but what about Minnesota’s women? This program highlights the incredible stories of Minnesota women who protected their homes, supported their soldiers, served the army in many different ways, and kept the home fires burning throughout the four years of the Civil War. Some were dedicated enough to continue working for veterans even after the war. Their stories long overlooked and forgotten, bring a new perspective to the history of America’s most bloody war.

On this last #whatisitwednesday of #WomensHistoryMonth, we're featuring an outfit worn by the first American woman to obtain the rank of ambassador- Eugenie Anderson!

Ambassador Anderson wore this brown velvet jacket and skirt when first meeting the King of Denmark. With some help from Red Wing High School intern Mariana, this combo will soon be on display again. Eugenie Anderson will be part of the History Center's next exhibit "Celebrating the Society: 150 Years at GCHS," opening at the end of May.

This week's #whatisitwenesday is one of the newest objects in GCHS's collection!

In November, Director Robin Wipperling accepted this award inducting Goodhue County's Frances Densmore into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. Densmore was an anthropologist who helped record the songs of Native American tribes in the early 1900s. The award will be on view in the exhibit Celebrating the Society: 150 Years at GCHS, opening at the end of May!

A little late due to Facebook's outages yesterday, but we're continuing our #WomensHistoryMonth theme by featuring GCHS's own Jean Chesley this week!

Chesley was born in Chicago in 1916 to Alexand P. and Lydia J. Anderson. Only a year later the family moved to Tower View Farm near Red Wing. She loved history and committed much of her life to it. In 1966, Chesley became president of GCHS and helped move the museum to its current location on College Hill. Over the next 30+ years, she also worked on exhibits, oral history projects, and led the building expansion in 1992. Jean Chesley passed away in 2010, but the impact she made on the Goodhue County Historical Society certainly lives on!

Happy #WomensHistoryMonth! For the next few weeks, we'll be featuring women from Goodhue County history every Wednesday.

Julia Bullard Nelson first moved to Goodhue County in 1857. Over the course of her prolific life, she taught in schools for African Americans in Texas and Tennessee, opened Red Wing's Equal Rights Meat Market with black businessman Jeremiah Patterson, and was also involved in the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Julia was perhaps most well known for advocating for women's suffrage, traveling the country to give speeches.

Happy #whatisitwednesday! Today's object is a plaque honoring Elmer Morris, Jr.— Goodhue County engineer from 1967-1977.

Morris and his family are believed to be Red Wing's first African American residents since 1924. In addition to his role as an engineer, he was a member of the local school board and a key figure in several projects accomplished by the Red Wing Housing and Redevelopment Authority. #blackhistorymonth

Today's #whatisitwednesday is instead a #whoisitwednesday!

In honor of #blackhistorymonth, here's a photograph of one of Goodhue County's first black business owners- Jeremiah Patterson, pictured with his wife Verna Gaylord.

Although Patterson was born into slavery in 1860, he eventually made his way to Minnesota with some help from Red Wing's Julia B. Nelson. The two opened the Equal Rights Meat Market together in 1897.
