Big influence on music that echoed through the valley....

In 1972, Willis Alan Ramsey released one of the greatest records in the history of Texas music. And not long after, he was the Big Dog in Austin, bigger than his Dallas folk music pals Michael Martin Murphey or B.W. Stevenson, bigger than Jerry Jeff Walker or the songwriters Townes Van Zandt, Guy Cl...

Orange Blossom Special

Fun day today going through my video files. There will probably be about 100 available to see on a special channel on YouTube that relate to the postcards, news articles, now/then and archived views in the printed book. You'll be most welcome to download all the video and audio to save on your home computer and share with family and friends. In fact, I will include the directions to links to online services that download from YouTube.

I don't make any money off of my YouTube channel, but I am trying to set it up so I can transfer it in the future to the RR Historical Society as a gift and the history will be saved.

On top of that news, I'm also going to offer a thumb drive, one that will connect to either your computer or device, with all the pages of the book in .pdf form (you'll be able to enlarge and scan the on your screen) and .mp4 files of the movies on YouTube. This I also encourage you to just get one for the family and share.

While sorting old RR info on YouTube I ran across this, thought some might enjoy. One of my first videos......4+years ago.
Music is by Tommy Hancock.....

Note on "It's Beautiful Here...", a book of postcards and RR history.

Had some new (old) material added the past two weeks and learned more about setting up a YouTube spot to save videos related to the book material. Also, that little foot of snow we had at my house in La Veta, CO reminded me I have some winterizing to do. So I've taken product listing in web store down and refunded the folks who pre-ordered.

I'll surely have ready for this Christmas, along with 2021 Calendars, and other seasonal gifts using material about Red River, New Mexico.

Deciding on how to best archive videos of RR history I've found (here's about 40 of the 400 I have).. There will be a sample on YouTube, but I'm thinking of doing a thumb drive of all the book's .pdf and .mp4 files for storing with your book.

This construction and the opening of Bobcat Pass changed northern NM dramatically.

Today in history

September 10, 1965: The bridge over the Rio Grande Gorge is dedicated as part of U.S. Route 64.

Construction began in 1963 on the span, 1,280 feet long and 660 feet above the Rio Grande near Taos. In 1966, the American Institute of Steel Construction awards the bridge "Most Beautiful Steel Bridge" in the "Long Span" category.

One of the plaques there is for Tommy and Charlene Hancock who gave the RR music scene a boost, as the Supernatural Family Band, by being the house band at the Doggone Saloon (the Bull) 1972-74. They also owned Lubbock's Cotton Club. I was early band member, bar manager and invited guest at induction ceremony in 2012.

Charles Hardin Holley was born in Lubbock on this day in 1936. The world would know him better as Buddy Holly.

Holly first performed in a talent show at age 5, took piano lessons at 11, and by high school had formed a band with friends. His solo contract in 1956 was with country-and-western label Decca, a mold that Holly didn’t fit. The label dropped him after two singles that didn’t take off, but Holly was determined to make it as a musician.

In 1957, he did. That year, Holly and the Crickets released “That’ll Be the Day,” featuring his distinctive vocals. Songs like “Peggy Sue,” “Oh Boy!,” and “Maybe Baby” followed, putting Holly’s voice at the top of the charts.

On February 3, 1959, Holly was killed at age 22 in a plane crash in Iowa. Also killed were singer Ritchie Valens, Beaumont DJ-turned-singer J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, and pilot Roger Peterson.

Holly was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

The Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock has an extensive collection of memorabilia and exhibits featuring Holly and other West Texas musicians.

Not normally a plate person, although my Mom liked them..saw this on Ebay last week and decided it might be worth a look, it is.

I'll include better pics in book. Looks like the views are from the late 1940s. One is the view from Flaggy and shows the grounds of the Riverside Lodge and some of the older buildings. Another shows the streets, including the fact that Main Street wasn't the main street through town until about 1963.

I'm going to want a RR home for my collection soon......

It's Beautiful Here...

Started building a YouTube page to support the video links to be included in the "It's Beautiful Here..." book of over 400 postcard and more rare views of Red River history. I have digitized all the historic videos I could find hidden away and hope to pass the interesting pioneer's stories, in some sort of order, on to folks who enjoy RR and its history. What a gang of characters, Tillie, Lester, Winnie, Bob, Pat, John and Rosie, John and Judy, Ilse, etc. Glad I had a chance to know them all. I hope to pass this YouTube collection, the book layout and videos on the the Historical Society in the far distant future.....
