To Cover Up or Not? It's Historically Been a Hot-Button Issue

A bit of Ramsey High history mentioned in this month's Sports Illustrated cover story: "When coach Johnny Sweatlock introduced face masks to his football team at Ramsey (N.J.) High, in 1953, he said of his young players, “The boys aren’t sissies, they’re just intelligent.” By the next year, 75% of high school teams provided at least one player on their roster with a face mask and a mouth guard, and 89% of coaches encouraged the wider use of masks."

2020 RHA Scholarship Announcement - We received more than a dozen excellent essays for this year's Historical Appreciation Scholarship. After much consideration, an essay on the role of the New Deal era Public Works Administration (PWA) in the construction of Ramsey High School was chosen. Congratulations to RHS Senior Teresa O'Hara, and best of luck to the RHS Class of 2020.

Congratulations from the RHA to Andre of Ramsey Bike & Ski, who at 92 has decided to retire this summer. The shop has kept generations of Ramsey youth biking since 1976, a Ramsey institution that will be missed.

An HO scale boxcar celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Hi-Way Hobby House. The Hi-Way Hobby House opened in Ramsey in 1953 (with a new building in 1976 on Route 17 North where there is now a Retro Fitness), and supported the model railroading needs of local residents, as well as many other hobbies, for 57 years.

NJ History: Bergen's first female sheriff's deputy

Some local history, but a little down the road in Wyckoff. The Kopp sisters are real life figures who became characters in a fiction series. Constance Kopp was Bergen County's first female sheriff's deputy.

This will likely come across as a somewhat obvious update, but the 2020 History Day Event originally scheduled for April 25th is now postponed. A discussion among the NW Bergen History Coalition member museums in late May will assess whether scheduling an event for this year will be possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Hey Ramsey Folks! I’m looking for some folks associated with the Howard Johnson’s restaurant on franklin turnpike. Anyone know of anyone who may have worked there in the early 1980s? Blessings to you all!

Hi, just wondering if anyone reading this might recall the name of a music store on south side of Main, probably mid-span between the tracks and the current Bank of America. They sold instruments, provided music lessons, sold records, posters, incense, strobe lights, etc., you get the drift. It operated from at least 1970 - 1974. It was not Mafia's! Hopefully there are a few old geezers out there might remember the name.
This is a collection of Lutz family Christmas photos taken in Ramsey, NJ between 1911 to 1937. My grandfather, Frank Brobson Lutz, had two older sisters and one younger. He was only two months old in the 1911 photo in the top left. The Frank And Martha Lutz family lived at 13 N Central Ave. Dr Frank Lutz was a noted entomologist and curator at the Museum of Natural History. The home stayed in the family until my Aunt Anne passed away in the 90s. Anne was a school teacher and very active in the historical preservation of Ramsey and the surrounding area. Enjoy these flashbacks to the magical Christmas season in Ramsey.

Hello, I’m look for any photos and any other information that you have on my Uncle George Messenger and/or Aunt Jule, she is the niece of my grandmother Kate Hopper and I have some pictures of her. I know he was Captain of the Fire Company. He and his family lived all their lives in Ramsey. I'm doing my family tree and can’t find a picture or any other newspaper or other information. He died May 4, 1994 and is buried in Redeemer Cemetery with many other of my family. My name is Edna Hopper I’m the daughter of Frank 'Herb' Hopper and niece of Charles 'Chuck' Hopper also of Ramsey. If you find anything that I can have a copy of you can email it to me [email protected] or message it. Thank you so much, Edna
Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me recall the name of a restaurant that used to be on Route 17 in the 1980s. It was a theme restaurant where all the wait staff were dressed as fictional characters, and they stayed in character during your meal. Does this ring a bell at all?
