Winter-Sowing

Out of the 130 milk-jug greenhouses we've planted so far, 44 have sprouted! Hollyhocks, oriental poppies, white sage among others. Have you tried winter sowing? It's not too late and it's great fun!

Here's a fine description from A Garden for the House, from Kevin Lee Jacobs

A Garden for the House, from Kevin Lee Jacobs

Winter-sowing, especially with Kevin Lee Jacobs, is just the best! We have gotten so many plants this way, especially varieties you can only get with seeds. And when you need plants in quantity, like at the Homestead, winter-sowing really helps a lot.

This post o' mine went viral in 2010. And no wonder: winter-sowing is fun to do, and the method really works!

So proud of and grateful to Rebecca Dinsmore, my mom, for 20 years of "gardening at Dorothy's." Volunteering just doesn't cover it. She's there almost every day and is the most faithful, loving, skillful gardener I could imagine. Mama, it's been 20 years since we opened the gate to an abandoned garden and started raking away dead leaves with our hands. Thank heaven, the DCR asked us the next week if we wanted to garden there!

The Quincy ParksConservancy had its annual meeting at the Homestead last evening. It absolutely was perfect: the celebration, the guests, the honoree, the dignitaries, the weather, the house, the gardens, the catering, the orchestra... let’s do it regularly! Go Parks Conservancy, the City of Quincy, the DCR, and the Colonial Dames! Yeah team! Yeah Meg Robbins!
