Among the eyewitnesses whose accounts contribute to our collective picture of the Normandy invasion are a small group of Army Artists who witnessed and documented on canvas the pre-invasion rehearsals, D-Day itself, and the days following, both in Normandy and in England.

The Naval War College Museum announces the opening of a new temporary exhibit...Fire and Ice: Combat Art from the Korean War. Often called the “forgotten war”, the Korean War started June 25, 1950, peace talks began in July 1951, but the war would continue until July 27, 1953. In all, five million soldiers and civilians would die, over 36,000 of them American. But the war is not forgotten. To help document the war, the #USNavy sent over two naval combat artists: Herbert Hahn and Hugh Cabot. The Naval War College Museum is honored to display 27 pieces of their art work in this exhibit. The exhibit, on the second floor of the museum, opens today and will run through Dec. 30, 2014. For more information, please contact the museum at 401-841-2101/4052 or go to facebook.com/navalwarcollegemuseum.

NMMC staff have been busy this week with the semi-annual cleaning of the macro artifacts. Staff arrive at 0600 to move in mobile work platforms underneath aircraft and to clean the ground based tanks and vehicles. Here the A-4E Skyhawk in the Vietnam War gallery gets some TLC from a special vacuum that gently removes dust and other debris that have settled on the aircraft.

The macro artifacts in Leatherneck Gallery get cleaned every evolution and the artifacts in the other galleries are cleaned on a rotating basis. Getting up close and personal to these macro artifacts, the curators and restoration staff can evaluate their physical condition for changes. Keeping the artifacts clean of dirt, dust, and other debris prolongs their life as artifacts and helps our visitors to enjoy them as long as possible!

A sneak peek of our Montford Point Marine exhibit. To see more of Paul’s work visit his website at www.googleplexmurals.com (or visit the National Museum of the Marine Corps).

Fun Museum fact for the day – many of the murals in the Museum are hand painted by a Marine Vietnam veteran. In fact, Paul Barker just completed a mural in the enhancement to our Montford Point Marine exhibit. This was his 19th large mural scattered throughout galleries in the Museum. Paul served in the Corps from 1969 – 1972, after obtaining a degree in sculpture from the University of Dallas in 1967. He participated in Operations Lam Son 719, Hoang Dieu 103, Upshur Stream, Imperial Lake and Scott Orchard while deployed to Vietnam in 1971. Contractually not able to sign the murals in the Museum, Barker found a creative way to “sign” his work. He painted a picture of his 25-year-old self into the mural behind the Ontos in Vietnam’s Hue City exhibit. Paul’s work is part of what makes the Museum a one-of-a-kind treasure. To see more of Paul’s work visit his website at www.googleplexmurals.com
