There’s more to a Leonardo da Vinci codex than Leonardo himself. 📖

Across thousands of surviving pages, scholars have spent centuries piecing together what was created by Leonardo, what came from his workshop or followers, and what was later copied, attributed, or connected to his ideas.

Even drawings once believed to be Leonardo’s have been reconsidered as new research emerged, reminding us that these pages don’t just preserve his genius. They preserve the mystery, influence, and evolving story of Leonardo’s legacy.

And scholars are still uncovering that story today.

Experience the museum through music on September 26 as Ars Nova Singers, Boulder’s acclaimed a ca****la chamber choir, performs Eric Whitacre’s “Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine.”

Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s lifelong fascination with flight, Whitacre’s celebrated choral work imagines the mind of Leonardo as he dreams, experiments, and reaches toward the impossible.

At first glance, she appears still. Look closer, and Leonardo’s experimentation begins to emerge.

Painted around 1474–1478, Ginevra de’ Benci is one of Leonardo da Vinci’s earliest surviving portraits and the first of only three surviving portraits of women attributed to him. Rather than presenting Ginevra strictly in profile, as was customary for many Florentine portraits of women, Leonardo turned her toward the viewer in a three-quarter pose, allowing her face, figure, and the landscape behind her to share the composition.

Behind Ginevra grows a juniper bush. The choice is deliberate: ginepro, the Italian word for juniper, creates a visual play on Ginevra’s name. Scholars have also associated juniper with chastity. Leonardo observed the plant with remarkable naturalistic detail, treating the surrounding natural world with the same attention he gave his sitter.

The portrait continues on the reverse of the panel, where laurel, palm, and juniper surround the Latin inscription VIRTVTEM FORMA DECORAT—“Beauty Adorns Virtue.” The imagery forms an emblematic portrait of Ginevra, connecting outward beauty with intellectual and moral virtue. Infrared examination has revealed an earlier motto associated with Venetian diplomat Bernardo Bembo beneath the surviving inscription, contributing to scholarly debate over his role in the painting’s commission.

Today, Ginevra de’ Benci is held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and remains the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas.
