The Museum of Peoples and Cultures exists to serve the academic mission of BYU and care for the anthropological, archaeological, and ethnographic collections in the custody of the University. The Museum of Peoples and Cultures is BYU’s Teaching Museum, inspiring students to life-long learning and service and mentoring them in collections-focused activities that reinforce BYU ideals of education as spiritually strengthening, intellectually enlarging, and character building. These activities concurrently serve the scholarly community, the LDS community, and/or the general public and aspire to the highest standards of stewardship and public trust. The Museum supports this mission by 1. Collecting, preserving, and caring for material objects that document the diversity of human experiences and reflect the multi-faceted fabric of the world’s cultures past and present; 2. Providing a professional learning environment for BYU students through a broad range of instruction in both formal and informal settings; through programs that enable student participation; and through example and role-modeling; 3. Facilitating teaching and research on peoples and cultures by BYU faculty, staff, students, and by members of the scholarly community in peer institutions; 4. Creating new knowledge through scholarly research including field activities, research, and exhibitions; and, 5. Educating museum visitors about peoples and cultures as appropriate to the Museum’s holdings and collecting scope.

One of our visitors' favorite experiences is looking for the tiny worry dolls we have hidden behind each glass case in our Maya Weaving exhibition.

Worry dolls are small figurines made from wire and wool in traditional Maya fashions. They are said to have the power of relieving all human worries, anxieties, or nightmares once placed underneath a pillow and slept on.

Can you find them all? Come by the museum and find out!

We are currently looking for individuals that would be willing to share a little bit of their native culture through presentations and activities at our upcoming Passports event on July 19, 2019.

The goal of passports is to help people connect to cultures from around the world through traditional/modern dance, art, and entertainment. Individuals are invited to share what their culture is like and how their heritage is embraced today. We would very much like this to be an exciting, interactive event and we really need the help of your students!

If you would be interested in either participating or volunteering to help with this event, please contact us through email or come into the museum directly for further information. The best email to reach us at is [email protected] and our address is 2201 N Canyon Rd. Thanks, and let us know if you have any questions!
