Every Fourth of July, there is nothing quite so charming as Bristol's Independence Day celebration. On a recent drive through town, it was heartening to see preparations underway for the famous Bristol Parade—a treasured Rhode Island tradition and the oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration in the nation.

It seems especially fitting to have this painting in the gallery for the summer. Depicting the U.S.S. Constitution, known affectionately as "Old Ironsides," the work captures one of the most iconic vessels in American history. Launched in 1797 and celebrated for its victories during the War of 1812, the ship remains a symbol of American resilience and craftsmanship.

Artist M. Clark beautifully portrays the Constitution's distinctive wooden hull, intricate rigging, and billowing sails, reminding us of the maritime heritage that shaped our nation.

A small Fourth of July tribute from BG Fine Art.

When you wake up in the morning, sometimes you just want "simple": a cup of coffee and a peaceful entry into the day before stepping back into the realities of a busy life.
Nineteenth-century painters like George Hays understood that. Looking up from your favorite chair at a quiet country scene on the wall offers a restful rhythm to daily life.

In the gallery business, we all come across works that make us pause—paintings with an undecipherable signature. Coming from a collection that included respected 20th-century artists such as Ann Packard and Mable May Woodward, this bold expressionist watercolor of a horse suggests a collector with a strong eye. But who painted it? A Boston expressionist? A Native American artist? The mystery remains. Part of the pleasure for the new owner will be the investigation itself—and the enjoyment of discovery along the way.

We have a fresh new look at www.bertgallery.art
Reworking a gallery website is a daunting task — especially when so much of what we do involves research, estate collections and the stories behind the artwork. The challenge was creating something that felt simple, direct and easy to explore while still reflecting the depth of the material we handle.

After much thought, plenty of editing, and helpful feedback from many clients and friends, here it is - www.bertgallery.art

I hope you enjoy taking a look around, and feedback is always welcome.

This dynamic drawing exemplifies the kind of work by Italo Scanga that has been historically collected and exhibited by major American museums. Rich in Cubist influence and layered with complexity, Scanga's compositions continue to captivate audiences.
Born in southern Italy, Scanga immigrated to the United States in 1947 at the age of 15. A true multidisciplinary artist, his practice spanned sculpture, painting, and printmaking—working in diverse materials such as wood, metal, glass, acrylic, gouache, and charcoal.
Scanga taught sculpture at institutions including the University of Wisconsin and the Rhode Island School of Design, and in 1976, he joined the faculty at the University of California, San Diego. Though active throughout his career, his work gained significant recognition in the mid-1980s, with major exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Whitney Museum of American Art, Walker Art Center, and LACMA.
His legacy lives on through the important collections that house his work and the generations of artists he helped inspire.
