An Homage to Nature

We are big fans of the art of woodblock printing. We are especially excited about this one, not only because of the artist who created it, but also because of the subject matter. Ansei Uchima was a true master of the genre who painstakingly executed each print using traditional Japanese methods. He carved his own wood blocks and even used custom paper by Japanese master papermaker Ichibei Iwano.  This print was part of a series that was his homage to nature, and the forest in particular.  Can you spy the tree?

Statement Sculpture in Soapstone

We wish we knew who carved this gorgeous sculpture in 1991. Unfortunately the signature at the base is illegible. She, or he, is very talented. The work has a beautifully rendered interplay of texture and shape — rough, smooth, and cross hatched stone. If you are looking for an affordable sculpture, this is one for you. If we knew the sculptor’s name it would be triple the price.

Sheldon’s Squeegie Painting

That’s Sheldon Berlyn we are talking about, noted abstract expressionist painter and professor of art.

As Al Harris wrote in the catalog for the 1997 University of Buffalo show "Sheldon Berlyn: New Work" --
Behind each Berlyn painting and drawing is a rigidly disciplined planning and working process. For Berlyn, the record of the brushstroke (in the case, most often a squeegie-stroke) is not as important as the interacting forms left behind when the painting is done. Then the crisp, translucent funnels of color assert themselves, coming close to three-dimensionality at points as they snake into and around each other…."

It’s a bird, it’s a plane. No, it’s definitely a bird.

Artist and art professor Robert Cooke was reaching for something here-- a bird or some mythical or comical creature conjured from his imagination. We see a tail, a beak, and the hint of a smile. Yes, abstract sculpture can be playful and fun too!

Collage by a Master of the Genre — Leo Manso

Leo Manso’s longtime friend Robert Motherwell said "One of collage's masters during the past decade is Leo Manso, whose impeccable sense of placement and musical silence amidst a noisy world calls up the Quattrocento of Manso's beloved Italy, if not its grandeur…Seductively beautiful as the work is at first sight, it holds its own like iron, a visual poetry that never compromises, never loses its inner life."

Manso's work is known for its fluid composition and rich use of color. It is in the permanent collections of MOMA, the Whitney, the Met, the Corcoran Gallery, and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.  He held more than 40 one man shows in galleries around the world and was a part of numerous important group shows at MOMA and the Whitney. He was a part time resident of Provincetown and a driving force in the development of Provincetown as a leading artists' colony in the 1940s. Manso joined the faculty of the Art Students League in New York in 1976 and continued to teach there until his death. He also taught at Columbia and NYU and was an artist in residence at Dartmouth in 1985. Married to his wife Blanche for 58 years, he passed away at his home in Manhattan in 1993.

David Garland: Painter in Clay

We were very fortunate to acquire a collection of ceramic works by celebrated UK artist David Garland.  This is the most impressive piece we have.  It is monumental in size and extremely complex in terms of the layers of glaze and depth of color.  It is, in effect, a beautiful abstract painting on ceramic.
