Community participation and focus group interaction play a pivotal role in shaping the sustainability of museums and visitor centers! EXP is providing presentation designs, content and renderings to the National Park Service to advance its new projects. Last week, at Cane River Creole National Park, the Natchitoches community and Lt. Governor of Louisiana came together to see the newly renovated train depot, unveil the newest Louisiana Civil Rights Marker and share thoughts on EXP Studios designed exhibit elements including storyline threads and interactive experiences! The invaluable tool of community engagement ensures that exhibits and programs resonate with the diverse interests and needs of the local community of Natchitoches and Africa American history nationally. The evaluation process provides a platform for open dialogue fostering inclusivity and cultural relevance. Feedback allows museums to refine their offerings, making them more engaging and accessible to ALL! By actively involving the community, museums transform into dynamic hubs of learning and cultural identity!

History has shaped Natchitoches, the Cane River region and America. Six million African Americans migrated from rural southern states between 1910-1970 to the north traveling through depots like the Cane River Depot.

The Railroad was a key mechanism in the shift of African Americans and their lives both locally in Natchitoches and nationally during the Great Migration. Suffering from the reverberations of slavery, travelers and products moved through the Cane River Depot between 1920-1960, a period which parallels the brutality of Jim Crow Laws and the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement. Concurrently, awareness of the nationally-treasured contributions of African Americans emerged in areas of music, art, entrepreneurship and beyond. This exhibition and its spirit and content is dedicated to recognition, study and healing of the African American people, the Cane River Region and its identity and culture.

Today, on-location in Las Cruces, New Mexico, EXP facilitated re-branding and re-imagining workshops of a national treasure at the Organ Mountain Monument. This enchanted, half-million acre gem features a legendary cave dwelling, indigenous petroglyphs, pre-historic fossil trackways, western culture and exquisite desert flora and fauna. Working with the US Bureau of Land Management’s expert staff and archaeologist Garrett Leitermann, EXP Studios (John Carney and Shaun McCauley) are shaping a new vision of preserving, protecting and presenting this iconic landscape for generations to come.

Today we multi-tasked. Worked on projects and attended the National Association of Interpretation Virtual Conference where we had a lightbulb 💡moment... learned the value of Tik Tok! Check out this data... what a way to create relevance for younger audiences to your institution! We are going to not only design “in” the Instagram moment to an exhibition, but now “tik tok” moments, too⚡️💡. We already have ideas!!! Thanks NAI.

Remembering work we did for the Louisiana State Museum. "Hurricanes" is a 9,000 square foot exhibition featuring the destruction of Katrina. This image is from the lobby... overhead bottles are suspended, reminding visitors both of the water survivors desperately needed and the water that destroyed the city. Fats Dominos' piano, destroyed by the floods is displayed. Water marks left inside homes by the floods are represented as stripes on the wall.
In honor of Earth Day 2020 we want to share one of our favorite places: Soule Homestead Education Center. It is located in the same rural Massachusetts town as our fabrication studio. It is a place dedicated to encouraging families and children to learn more about our living world, local ecological issues and so much more. The town of Middleboro owns the land the Homestead has operated on for well over 20 years. It is a former dairy farm and home which was also a home to a childhood friend. If you live nearby, or even if you don't, check out their page! It is quite a place!!
