OUR RETIREMENT PLAN: BOG WITCHES.

Rebecca and I plan to move south and become bog witches. Raina has suggested a bog with carnivorous pitcher plants. Richard offered a backup plan: New Jersey cranberry witches. How did this happen during a vintage-postcard investigation? Welcome to Postmarked & Tipsy. ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

Iโ€™ve told this story before.
And I still donโ€™t know what happened in that room. ๐Ÿ‘ป

Years ago, I visited the Whaley House in San Diego while I was there on a business trip. I wasnโ€™t ghost hunting. I didnโ€™t know there was supposed to be anything unusual about the upstairs bedroom I walked into.

But the second I entered, I felt it.
Dread. Sadness. Hopelessness.
Like someone had dropped a 50-pound coat over my shoulders.

It was so strong that I turned to a complete stranger and asked:
โ€œCan you feel that?โ€
She could.

I left the room.

And only afterward did someone tell me its story.
Thatโ€™s the part Iโ€™ve never been able to explain.

Every postcard has a story. Some should probably be read after dark.

๐Ÿท๐Ÿ“ฎ WANTED: Curious minds, good storytellers and people who appreciate a little historical nonsense.

We're now scheduling guests for our November Tavern Cold Reads!

What's a Tavern Cold Read?

We gather a few guests on Zoom, hand them vintage postcards they've never seen before, and let the conversations unfold.

We decipher mysterious messages, speculate about the senders and recipients, explore unexpected historical connections and occasionally go completely off the rails. ๐Ÿ˜‚

No research. No preparation. No postcard expertise required.

Just bring your curiosity, your sense of humor and your favorite beverage.

Interested in joining us for a future recording? Send us a message!

๐Ÿ“ฌ๐Ÿธ A POSTCARD, A LIGHTHOUSE AND A LEGENDARY RHODE ISLAND WOMAN!

You know we can't resist a vintage postcard with a story behind it!

This beauty from the Postmarked & Tipsy collection features Lime Rock Light in Newport Harbor, once home to Ida Lewis, the legendary lighthouse keeper credited with rescuing 18 people from the water.

And this Saturday, October 24, our friends at the The Steamship Historical Society of America are hosting a special presentation:

โš“ Ida Lewis: The Legendary Lady Light Keeper of Lime Rock

Local historian and author Brian Wallin will explore the remarkable life of this Rhode Island heroine.

๐Ÿ“ Ship History Center, Warwick, RI
๐Ÿ•ฅ 10:30 a.m. (doors open at 10 a.m.)
๐Ÿ’ป Also available via Zoom!

I'd love to attend, but I may be busy "vacating the Tavern" that day. And no, that's not a euphemism for being thrown out after one too many cocktails! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿธ

If you're a fan of Rhode Island history, lighthouses, remarkable women or the stories behind vintage postcards, this sounds like a wonderful way to spend your Saturday morning.

A big thank-you to our friends at the Steamship Historical Society for all they do to preserve and share maritime history โ€” and for being such wonderful supporters of Postmarked & Tipsy! โค๏ธ

LETโ€™S INVENT SOME PEOPLEโ€™S LIVES.

Who are Wanda, Ethel, Mac and Cindy? Our guests decide Ethel might be an older sister, Mac her husband and Cindy their child. Or we could be spectacularly wrong. This is what happens when you hand us three lines of questionable handwriting. ๐Ÿ˜‚

โ€œMISS MY OWN CORNERSโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMiss my own corners, but I will get used to it after a while.โ€ Wanda wrote those words in 1966. Decades later, her homesickness still feels familiar. Thatโ€™s what I love about postcards: tiny glimpses of real lives. And yes, Cindy remains a mystery. ๐Ÿ“ฎ

DID WANDA LEAVE HER PUPPY BEHIND?!

When we reveal that Wandaโ€™s postcard depicts a Connecticut nursing home, the mood changes. Could Cindy have been a dog she left behind? We have absolutely no evidence Cindy was a puppy, but we are now emotionally invested. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’”
