🏫⁉️ Mystery Object Reversal! ⁉️ 🏫
Instead of showing an object today, we are looking for one. Interestingly, we can’t locate any archive photos of the current Fountain School building and would love any (physical or digital) of the exterior at the time it was built or in use as a school. Thanks everyone!

Another interesting Forestville landmark out on the trails is Zumbro Hills Cemetery, which was established on land donated by Major Foster ca. 1855. It is located about one mile north of the visitor center at Historic Forestville. Forestville did not have a church, with services held in people’s homes, so many residents chose to be buried in church cemeteries in nearby towns like Carimona. There were about 35 burials in Zumbro Hills Cemetery with 19 legible stones. The earliest burial that we can see belongs to Hokah Bassett who was just over 1 year old when she died in 1856. Cemetery records from Zumbro Hills no longer exist so we’re not sure how she died but it’s a very sad reminder of how hard life could be during this time.

🎉🔎#5! We have a little different mystery post today... this figure is one of the earliest objects in our collection (it has an accession number under 1000) and was presumably donated in the 30’s. It has no markings and we’d like to see if anything more can be found out about it’s origins, age, etc.

In times like these, we believe history can help:
🛑 the FCHS History Center will be closed to the public to do our part to encourage social distancing,
💻 our staff are still able to assist with remote genealogy requests through our website: www.fillmorecountyhistory.org
🕵️‍♀️ each day we will post an object from our collection that has stumped our staff and invite all you internet sleuths to help identify it...we'll help you pass the time and you help us solve museum mysteries!
💪 And in the words of Helen Keller - “Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much”

😊A little fun fact for your Friday...

2️⃣ The second graduating class, 1891, from Preston High School had four people in it. And they were four beautiful ladies! 👧 👧 👧 👧

▶️ L to R: Louise Baker, Lucy Gray, Stella Gray and Jennie Taylor

❓Can anyone claim them?

Side note: 👗 Those are pretty fabulous graduation outfits, too!

Wishing you all a great Holiday season from all of us the Preston Historical Society!

We wanted to share a little “gift” of history!

The poem you see here was written by A.L. Sleyster who ran a photography studio from 1883 to 1899 in Preston. It was located where Root River Veterinary Center stands today.
He was also an artist, poet and teacher.
The poem came from his “Christmas Greetings” book, which was printed in 1891.

Enjoy! 🎄

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Today, we pay tribute to all veterans who served our country during war or peacetime. #VeteransDay #History

Attention Viking Fans! This lock from our museum collection was allegedly owned by Leif Eriksson, the famous Viking explorer who may have been the first European to visit North America. (See what we did there...viking fans...😉) While research is yet to be done to confirm its origin we CAN confirm it was passed down through the Olaf Tangen family and used for many years on their barn to deter local horse thieves...
