Established in 1981, the Elizabeth Leach Gallery presents prominent Northwest and internationally established artists working in a wide variety of contemporary media.

Austin-based artist Elizabeth Hohimer brings the visual languages of Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, and Color Field painting to her work.

Working on a sixteen-harness European floor loom, Hohimer uses an intricate double-cloth technique to build woven compositions through color, structure, and repetition. Her textiles balance precision with softness, creating works that feel both architectural and deeply personal.

Through this process, Hohimer explores place, memory, and belonging in a medium where surface and structure are inseparable.

Ellen Lesperance’s work rewards close viewing, where intricate patterns evoke the structure and surface of fabric. She is one of six artists featured in Contemporary Textiles, currently on view during Portland Textile Month.

Drawing from historic protest movements and handmade textiles, Lesperance translates knit patterns found in archival photographs into meticulous works on paper using pencil, ink, and paint. Her work honors women-led environmental, anti-nuclear, and civil rights movements through the garments worn by protestors and cultural figures.

Lesperance has exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, and her work is held in collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, MOCA Los Angeles, and the Walker Art Center.

For MK Guth, textiles become a way of bringing people together. Guth is one of six artists featured in Contemporary Textiles, currently on view at the gallery in celebration of Portland Textile Month.

Through participatory installations and performances, MK Guth invites audiences to braid and sew fabric into shared sculptures and tapestries. These collective gestures become material expressions of connection and engagement.

Guth has exhibited internationally at institutions including the Melbourne International Arts Festival, PICA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the Frye Art Museum. In 2008, she was included in the Whitney Biennial.

Congratulations to Stephen Hayes on his recent commission for Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, Oregon, featuring striking landscape paintings of the Klamath River.

OPENING October 1, 2026

Chris Chandler | Expression of Structure
Inspired by the geometric designs and bold typography of the Bauhaus and Constructivist movements, Chandler splices, magnifies, and abstracts familiar letterforms. By making everyday characters newly unfamiliar, the work invites viewers to reconsider language not as fixed, but as something continually constructed, interpreted, and rebuilt.

Chris Chandler is a self-taught artist who fell into art and printmaking after acquiring his first Vandercook Press in 1996. He has exhibited his works across the Pacific Northwest, New York City, Los Angeles and Oklahoma, and he has been represented by Elizabeth Leach Gallery since 2022.

OPENING October 1, 2026: Contemporary Textiles

Elizabeth Leach Gallery is pleased to present Contemporary Textiles, a group exhibition featuring the work of six artists from four states including MK Guth, Elizabeth Hohimer, Ellen Lesperance, Mary Ann Peters, Vo Vo, and Anna Von Mertens. The gallery exhibition coincides with Portland Textile Month and each artist brings their unique backgrounds, skills, and ideas to offer distinct perspectives on this year’s theme: Layers of Resilience.

These six artists weave, knot, knit, and stitch together their memories, experiences, and communities. This exhibition pulls their selected works into a rich conversation, illuminating each artist’s distinct voice while revealing the common threads that bind the group together.

Lee Kelly | Early Works

On view until September 26

This exhibition brings together a collection of Kelly’s early works from 1958 - 1965, a period of experimentation across drawing, painting, and sculpture.

Throughout the works on view, lines loop and intersect, shapes shift and re-form, and Kelly moves fluidly between two and three dimensions. Works on paper explore gesture, form, and structure, while painted and welded sculpture carries those investigations into physical space.

Together, the works reveal Kelly developing a visual language through material, movement, and an ongoing process of making and discovery.
