Paul Brahms 'View of the Homer studio Prout’s Neck, Scarborough, Maine 2026' 18 x 24 Oil on Canvas
"This painting is a result of a collaboration between the painter Paul Brahms, Casco Bay Artisans and the Portland Museum of Art, starting with Jess Lauren’s idea having Paul paint on the site of the museum's satellite property, the actual studio in which the great American realist painter Winslow Homer worked and created many of his great masterpieces, the property is situated on the stunning, small peninsula Prout’s Neck, which itself is adorned with a lush variety of wild plants, white spruce, Balsom fir, eastern white pine, bayberry, low blueberry, Rosa ragosa aka. sea rose. The studio itself is a historic and interesting design by the acclaimed local architect John Calvin Stevens.
A significant part of the collaboration was to have Paul create a plain air painting on the property during the museum's soiree, a party to celebrate the museum’s generous patrons. The day of the event was an overcast and drizzly July day, a distinctly moody Maine coastal experience. The painting captures that foreboding chill one can experience even in the height of summer, there is a sense of the humidity and slickness of the dew laden roof. The bluish grey coolness of the day heightens the subtle warm glow emanating from the center of the composition. Perhaps one can imagine Homer at work within, creating images to fill the imagination, his heart if you will, his spirit invoked as if by candle light so as not to be extinguished by the years and veils of mist and dimming light."
