Then & Now

Montgomery County has a proud historical heritage that began more than 300 years ago with the arrival of settlers from England, Ireland and Wales. The county is fortunate to have organizations that are actively working to preserve, promote and impart historical information and resources. Here is the Montgomery County government page with links to these organizations:

USS Constellation, constructed in 1854, is a sloop-of-war/corvette and the second United States Navy ship to carry the name. Constellation is the last sail-only warship designed and built by the Navy. She is actually larger than a "sloop", and more powerfully armed with fewer but much more potent shell-firing guns. She was launched on 26 August 1854 and commissioned on 28 July 1855. From 1859–1861 she took part in African Slave Trade Patrol operations to disrupt the Atlantic slave trade. Constellation spent much of the war as a deterrent to Confederate cruisers and commerce raiders in the Mediterranean Sea. She remained in service for close to a century before finally being retired in 1954, and is preserved as a museum ship in Baltimore, Maryland, where she remains today. Come to "Poolesville in History Day" THIS SATURDAY MAY 7th and meet the ship's crew of the USS Constellation. 9:30 to 4:00 pm

History Question #2:
Senator/Colonel Edward Baker was killed in the Battle of Balls Buff. Which Poolesville building was his body brought back to from the battle? Bonus: Who was his BBF?

Answer to History Question#1: Poolesville’s telegraph line carried the war news to Washington, DC. The New York, Philadelphia, and Boston newspapers datelined the report as coming from Poolesville. That dateline made us globally famous in the mid-1800s.

Much more to learn: Come to Poolesville in History Day, May 7, 9:30 a.m. – 4:p.m. at Whalen Commons and the center of town. The role of Poolesville in the Battle of Balls Bluff will be presented by expert guides from the Balls Bluff National Park. The Old Town Hall/ Bank Museum will host lectures on Poolesville in the Civil War from 10:20 and 2:00 p.m.
