Friday marks the 50th anniversary--that's half a century--of 𝘑𝘢𝘸𝘴'
premiere across the country. Here in Pittsburgh, it opened at the Gateway Theater on Sixth Street--another of downtown's long-gone and all-but-forgotten movie palaces. The Gateway was in the block between Heinz Hall and the Byham (then known at the Fulton). 𝘑𝘢𝘸𝘴 was the first summer blockbuster, and the last megahit in Pittsburgh that you could only see on its first run downtown.

How big was 𝘑𝘢𝘸𝘴 on its opening run? In the summer of 1975, a customer called the West Penn AAA office on Sixth Street downtown and asked where the office was located. The clerk told her, “Across the street from ‘Jaws.’”
The film is so well-known, it’s easy to forget it’s also one of the greatest thrillers ever made.

𝗚𝗨𝗟𝗙 𝗧𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗘𝗦

This is the lobby of the majestic 582 foot tall Gulf Tower. The last three tenants are in the process of moving out. They're turning into in a hotel/residential skyscraper. It used to be a mini-city--Palmers on the ground floor was packed for lunch, and there was constant hustle and bustle in the lobby. There has been little vitality in the building since COVID. After the pandemic, it suffered a catastrophic fire that shuttered it for months. And that was the nail in the coffin--what once was the tallest and grandest building in Pittsburgh has to be repurposed in order to survive.

For a long time, the building served as the world headquarters for Gulf Oil, one of world's largest corporations and one of the Mellon family's most lucrative investments. Gulf Oil ceased to exist in 1984 when it merged with Chevron. For 38 years, the company's iconic headquarters was the tallest building in the Pittsburgh skyline until it was topped by the U.S. Steel Building in 1970. The 38th floor observation deck was a Pittsburgh destination spot—in the early days, Andrew Mellon could be spotted walking the promenade-in-the-clouds all by himself.

The grand old building has seen a lot of history, but nothing so harrowing as what occurred on the evening of June 13, 1974, when it was bombed by the Weather Underground. No one was injured, but it caused extensive damage.

They are preserving the marble and will honor the building's legacy in the next edition. Personal note: my law firm moved into the Gulf Tower May 1, 1992. We are one of the last three tenants to go.
