Friday marks the 50th anniversary--that's half a century--of ๐๐ข๐ธ๐ด'
premiere across the country. Here in Pittsburgh, it opened at the Gateway Theater on Sixth Street--another of downtown's long-gone and all-but-forgotten movie palaces. The Gateway was in the block between Heinz Hall and the Byham (then known at the Fulton). ๐๐ข๐ธ๐ด was the first summer blockbuster, and the last megahit in Pittsburgh that you could only see on its first run downtown.
How big was ๐๐ข๐ธ๐ด on its opening run? In the summer of 1975, a customer called the West Penn AAA office on Sixth Street downtown and asked where the office was located. The clerk told her, โAcross the street from โJaws.โโ
The film is so well-known, itโs easy to forget itโs also one of the greatest thrillers ever made.
