🐸 In October 2024, Jennifer Sheridan of Carnegie Museum of Natural History traveled halfway around the world on her latest research trip to the rainforests of Borneo.

The associate curator of amphibians and reptiles at the Natural History Museum spent two weeks trekking through rainforests and crossing streams to record frog calls, collect specimens, and gather data to better understand the impact of humans on biodiversity. Meanwhile, people 9,500 miles away in Pittsburgh followed Sheridan’s adventures via a pair of livestream events, and even played a game of “Borneo Frog Bingo” to track the different species she encountered.

❤️ In 1896, Andrew Carnegie held the first Carnegie International Exhibition at the Carnegie Institute, now known as Carnegie Museums, with the goal of making Pittsburgh "as famous for art as it is now for steel". The longest-running event of its kind here in North America, the exhibition is now held every three to five years instead of its original annual celebration.

🖼️ Many of the 19 featured artists within the exhibition "Widening the Lens: Photography, Ecology, and the Contemporary Landscape" contextualize the past, present, and future of landscape photography in ways that raise questions about what is and isn’t shown and the influence of those choices. In an era when nearly everyone can readily capture a landscape with ease—and as the natural world is threatened in ways scarcely imagined in the 19th century—the exhibition feels all the more urgent.
