Happy World Art Day!
This painting by Platzer shows an idealized vision of the artist himself in his studio. At the center of the composition, the painter presents his finished masterpiece to a potential collector, surrounded by a busy studio filled with live models, pupils, assistants, and artwork from earlier eras. Platzer champions the art of painting as a timeless, noble, and intellectual pursuit worthy of exaltation.

🌸 Would Georgia O’Keeffe have appreciated if we offered her flowers on her birthday?
“I hate flowers, - she once said - I paint them because they’re cheaper than models and they don’t move.”
Anyway, you can treat yourself with this exuberant floral abstraction vintage print from the Goldin Fine Art collection that represents O’Keeffe’s famous painting “Grey Lines with Black, Blue, and Yellow” from the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston
11.11.2021 marks the bicentennial birth of Fyodor Dostoevsky. It’s a meaningful event for us, as Mikhail Goldin worked for Dostoevsky Museum in Saint Petersburg in the 1980s.
To celebrate the anniversary, we present a painting from the collection of Goldin Fine Art. This is a hand painted porcelain plaque made in Berlin, at KPM (Konigliche Porzellan Manufactur), after Antonio Correggio’s painting “Mary Magdalen reading”.
The original painting was housed in Dresden Gallery since 1745, when Augustus III of Saxony bought it among other 6 paintings by Correggio in Modena, Italy.
In 1867, Dostoevsky at the age of 47 with his young wife Anna went abroad for the first time in their lives. Their first big stop was Dresden. They dropped their luggage in the hotel and first headed to the famous Dresden Gallery.
Their tour started at Sistine Madonna and then led to Correggio.
Mary Magdalen is one of the iconic images for Dostoevsky, one of the prototypes of Sonechka Marmeladova from “Crime and Punishment”. This character can also be found in other masterpieces of the author.
The original painting by Correggio mysteriously disappeared from the Gallery after World War 2. What is left to us are some engravings published in the 19th century and several porcelain plaque copies of Mary Magdalen by skillful artists of KPM. One of these plaques is currently in the collection of our gallery.
"Life is like a fountain” states Georg Andreas Bockler (1617-1687) in his engravings. Bockler, a German architect and engineer, admired the possibilities of water such as windmills, pumps, and, of course, fountains.
Sixteen engravings of both real, like the Tritons in Rome, and imaginary fountains have been added to the collection of Goldin Fine Art.

The “Backstage” lithograph by Moses Soyer (1899 Russia – 1974 USA) for the World Ballet Day!
The artist’s wife, Ida, was a dancer, and many of his paintings are of ballet dancers.

Melpomene.
One of the most remarkable etchings in the Goldin Fine Art collection bears the monogram signature of the preeminent Dutch artist Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617).
However, its provenance is worth a separate conversation:
⏺ The GB stamp on the reverse is a hallmark of George Björklund (1887-after 1968), a renowned collector of Old Master prints from Stockholm, recognized expert, co-author of the most authoritative Rembrandt etchings catalogue.
⏺ This information is further confirmed by the label of Phyllis Kind Gallery. The legendary American art dealer Phyllis Kind (1933-2018), who, over a decades-long career, played a leading role in the development of an international market for the work of art brut and outsider artists, was an extravagant lady and a women's rights advocate. Besides, she initiated the unofficial Soviet art show in 1987 "Direct from Moscow!"
⏺ "Melpomene" comes from the Joshua B. Kind Trust. Joshua Kind (1933-2019) was a Professor of Art History at Northern Illinois University, Northwestern University, and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Phyllis and Joshua divorced in the 1970s.
We know only the part of the story covering approximately the last 100 years of this print’s existence. Perhaps, the preceding centuries will remain a mystery.
During its lifetime, this engraving connected the Old World collector, academic circles of Chicago and avant-garde American art community. We are fostering it with care. What would be its next journey?

We’d like to celebrate the World Photography Day by presenting this stunning and scarce portrait of the Italian opera genius Gioachino Rossini by Étienne Carjat from the Goldin Fine Art collection.
📸It was created in 1862 using a rare, elaborate and expensive photography technique- woodburytype - that provided intense prints of high quality.
The most sought-after woodburytypes are the portraits of Rossini and Baudelaire made by Carjat.
📖 “Indeed, Carjat's flair for capturing the spirit of his celebrity subjects frequently equaled or excelled that of his better known contemporary, Nadar, who depended heavily on dramatic side lighting for his effects.” Source: National Gallery of Art website.

Goldin Fine Art presents an iconic rare book from our collection.
BECHER, Bernhard und Hilla. Anonyme Skulpturen. Dusseldorf, Art-Press Verlag, 1970.
First edition of one of the most important contemporary architecture books, dedicated to industrial buildings such as Lime-kilns, Cooling towers, Blast furnaces, Winding-towers, Gas-holders, Silos. Avant-garde photography book. Original blue cloth hardcover and the dust jacket.
"The authors were the German husband-and-wife team of Bernd and Hilla Becher… [who] looked backwards to the ‘objective’ rather than the ‘subjective’ German photography of the 1920s and early 30s, and also to an era in European industrialization that had largely ended with WWII. But the Bechers also represented the future. They looked forward to a new integration between the traditional arts and photography, and to a new period of vigour and excitement in European photography” (Parr & Badger, The Photobook, 193).

🖼 The Cumaean Sibyl conducting Aeneas to the entrance of the Infernal Regions. Etching with mezzotint by Richard Earlom. Published by John Boydell in 1777.
The delicate summer palette is highlighted with bright turquoise accents in this 18th century hand-colored engraving after Claude Lorrain.
📖 The original painting is lost. The drawing that served as a source for this engraving was in the collection of Duke of Devonshire. It illustrates a scene from the Aeneid in which Aeneas, the Trojan hero, prepares to visit the underworld. Aeneas is led by a prophetess known as the Cumaean Sibyl. Virgil set this scene at night, but Claude preferred to emphasize the majestic landscape with the sunlight. 🌅

Enjoy a breath of fresh spring air from turquoise green Friesland fields. Do you know that this hidden European gem is the only Dutch province with its own official language?
Edna Hibel Plotkin (1917-2014), an American artist, well known for her works in the impressionist manner. She has created more multi-color stone lithographs than any other artist from the time of the media’s invention in 1795 and was the first American woman to be honored with the Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts.
Besides, Edna Hibel Plotkin received numerous awards for her humanitarian achievements. In 1990, she came to Saint Petersburg with her travelling exhibitions Golden Bridge and Peace Through Wisdom to promote intercultural communication between US and Russia. As a result, she produced a documentary for PBS channel Hibel's Russian Palette including her sincere interviews of ordinary people.
The commitment of this uniquely talented woman artist to peace and compassion is unparalleled, this is what our current world is lacking.

Irises. Vintage limited edition art poster from Goldin Fine Art collection. 1985.
In May 1890, just before he checked himself out of the asylum at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted four exuberant bouquets of spring flowers. In the Irises he sought a “harmonious and soft” effect by placing the “violet” flowers against a “pink background,” which have since faded owing to his use of fugitive red pigments.
