According to ancient historians and storytellers including Cicero, Livy, Plutarch and Dionysus of Halicarnassus, the kidnapping of the Sabine women occurred in the mid-8th century BC. Romulus, one of the fabled founders of Rome, instructed his soldiers to forcibly seize the women of neighboring Sabine due to a shortage of women for the men of Rome to marry. By the time the Sabines mounted a rescue, the abducted women were already married and some had borne Roman children.
