Wow is this post overdue! Last month I participated in an amazing event called Paint Out Norfolk. It’s an intense 9 day plein air painting competition that takes place in different locations all over the beautiful east coast county in the UK. I came to think of it as the Olympics of painting; carrying gear from the coast to the city, painting non-stop through the hottest days in UK history, I even got stung by three Yellowjackets in one day- Coincidentally while painting this particular painting. This was also THE hottest day ever in the UK, reached into the 100’s (40’s Celsius)! I applied in the hopes of meeting other like minded artists, which I was fortunate to do en-mass being that there were almost 100 of us. Each day we would bring our wet paintings directly from on site and place them while still wet in a tent lined with shelves that quickly filled up with almost 900 paintings over the course of the competition. Then the judges were brought in and asked to select their favorite painting to award.

I was stunned when they announce me as a winner, having never considered the competition aspect, only the opportunity to paint with many seriously hard-core artists.

The whole experience was wild. I was pushed to my limits in SO many ways (even driving in the left for the first time by going on essentially a 9 day road trip alone) and came away with some wonderful new friends. So much gratitude to and the rest of the badass participating painters for being so welcoming to a complete stranger! Looking forward to next year! ❤️🎨🖼

The seal is broken! My new studio is finally up running. I told myself I’d skip peony season this year, but this cool little Victorian stoneware vessel that I DUG UP OUT OF MY GARDEN (you read that right- because why wouldn’t you find 130 year old things buried out back in Cambridge?😂) felt like the right object to work off the rust with. I managed to salvage the last four buds of the peony bouquet that I declared I wouldn’t paint, gasping their last breath before being immortalized. Clumsily. But the brushes moved, and that’s what matters.
Going to be a bit of a challenge navigating around my nosey studio assistant, too. Good thing she’s cute. 🤓

More sky gazing to be had. Posting because I had not yet, but only two remain. Thank you to all who came out to support me on Saturday, it was such a pleasure to have you. The sparseness of what is left is very surreal- hope I can eek out some studies before I depart. And for those of you who couldn’t make it and wish to visit: shoot me a DM and we can schedule it. ♥️

Hello my friends,

I know it's been a while since I've made any noise in this fishbowl, so today I write with exciting news to share. My partner has accepted a teaching position at Cambridge Universty in the UK, so come the new year I will be splitting my time between England and the US.

While I am maintaining my studio in Philadelphia, I am paring down my studio inventory. So please join me for a holiday sale/transatlantic-send-off on Saturday, December 4th. Works will be priced to sell. As always there are many landscape, still-life, floral, figure and portrait studies available for purchase.

The studio building is located in the Lower Kensington area of Philadelphia, just a few short blocks west of the hustle and bustle of Fishtown. Masks required. You'll find plenty of street parking and a lively bar and restaurant scene within walking distance to make an afternoon or evening of it. If you would prefer a private viewing, I am taking appointments for the following week.

Thank you for your support through the years. I'm excited to embark on painting a new body of work to share with you in the future. This is "à bientôt" not "au revoir".

Added a couple more flower studies to my holiday sale. These are how the more finished florals begin-very lose and open, then slowly get refined. Sometimes I wonder why I don’t leave them in this stage. That damn demon of correction always screaming in my head is a real jerk.

Can’t stop, won’t stop...Just added a grouping of drawings to the Holiday Sale. There really is nothing like the immediacy of dry media. There is the least amount of premeditation between the brain and the mark. (Unlike painting- always mixing color, first.) I cannot wait until it’s ok to work from live models again!

Happy official beginning of the holiday season! I am very sad that this year’s Open Studio had to be postponed and that I will not get to see so many of you. I hope everyone is well and gearing up for a safe and cozy day of thanks. I just stumbled upon this painting from a way’s back and, like it’s title, it gave me “Pause”. It’s wild how time has flown, and with it these hard and fast ideas about what exactly makes a painting successful. Sometimes I feel like I forgot. Then I remember I never really knew in the first place, I just thought I did. So gotta keep searching. 🎨

Yesterday I had the honor of being invited to judge this years’ Susan Macdowell Eakins Painting Prize at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. I was truly impressed with the winner’s beautiful work! (Note- If you are one of the winners send me a message with a link to your Instagram and/or Facebook and I will add it to this post.)
It’s always such a pleasure to visit the inspiring halls where so many incredible artists have trained over the last 215 years. Judging from the skills of these recent winners, I’d say that trend is still going strong. 🙌🏼
