Economists say the average dollar earned by blacks stays in our community for 6 hours. Compare that to the white community. Dollars circulate in the white community for 17 days! Some laugh at our spending habits -- then they harvest our dollars like locusts in a field of corn. They don’t care that s...

WURD, WHYY and Philadelphia Media Network (Daily News, Inquirer and Philly.com) invite you to join us for "Reimagining Race and Education." This event is the second installment of our Courageous Conversations series, which focuses on race, class and culture. Race plays out in many ways in our schools, from funding inequity, to conflict, to how students and teachers view themselves and are viewed. How can we confront these issues, which hurt the whole community, and turn them into opportunities for conversation, understanding, and change?

"Reimagining Race and Education"
Date: Thursday, September 28th
Location: Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, 2800 W. Cheltenham Ave.
Time: 6:00-8:00pm, Doors Open at 5:30
We have chosen to host this conversation in the Cheltenham community in the aftermath of the violence that was captured on video last spring between African-American girls. The general concept is that, when it comes to race and education, geography often doesn't matter. Even in a somewhat affluent suburban neighborhood, the issues of race, equity and education converge in interesting and sometimes troubling ways.

This conversation is not meant to focus exclusively on Cheltenham High School, however, rather use this example as a way to look at how public schools are evolving in the Philadelphia region overall and most importantly how do we "reimagine" public education so it provides high quality, culturally relevant education for all.

Panelists:
Sara Goldrick-Rab, Professor of Higher Education Policy and Sociology, Temple University
Kristen Graham, Urban Education Reporter, Inquirer/Daily News
Otis Hackney, Chief Education Officer, City of Philadelphia
Dr. Wagner Marseille, Superintendent, Cheltenham School District
Rev. Dr. Alyn E. Waller, Senior Pastor, Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church
Dr. Howard Stevenson, Moderator, Constance Clayton Professor of Urban Education, University of Pennsylvania
