Speaking of Jack Fisk (if you saw our re-share of Vintage Philly's post with a 1967 image of Jack with David Lynch in Philly)... in anticipation of the upcoming film, "Killers of the Flower Moon," NYT mag put out this great article about Jack and his work:

How Jack Fisk, the master production designer behind ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and many other films, brings the past to life.

While you're out and about, traveling or passing through 30th Street Station, stop to admire the work of Adam Crawford, Euphonic & Chromatic Drift.

Who knew 30th Street Station could get even more beautiful?

Our latest installation comes via local artist Adam Crawford, who produced a large-scale, vinyl mural that graces the window facades on both the East and West ends of our Philadelphia station.

*Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day* We recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a time to come together in honor of the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples around the world and recognize and uplift the voices and experiences of the First Nations, Native Americans, and Indigenous communities who have been stewards of the land for millennia.

Featured in Rising Sun: Artists in an Uncertain American, Indigenous artist, Rose B. Simpson’s work “Delegate” is a larger-than-life ceramic figure adorned with clay pots, bearing a vessel on its head pierced with light-catching holes. Simpson’s practice is rooted in her ancestral homelands of Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, where women have crafted ceramics for centuries, utilizing diverse ceramic, textile, and metalwork methods to craft sculptures with a profound purpose: healing on emotional, physical, cultural, intellectual, and spiritual levels. This sculpture symbolizes the silencing and erasure of Native American voices in U.S. history narratives and raises questions about the representation of Indigenous peoples in our political system.

✨The day is finally here - Determined to Be: the Sculpture of John Rhoden is now OPEN at PAFA! ✨Not only is this the first comprehensive retrospective of Rhoden’s work, it’s a re-introduction to one of the most prolific sculptors of the 20th century.

With a sculptural sensibility defined by his extensive world travels, sensualism, and a breadth of visual influences, Rhoden worked in a style that was ahead of his time, creating, traveling, and supporting his practice alongside his partner, wife, and fellow artist, Richanda. Through approximately 70 sculptures in bronze, wood, and stone, and archival materials from the recently-processed John Rhoden Papers, this exhibition illustrates the visual and technical mastery of this award-winning artist.

Congratulations to the visionary who brought this show to life, Dr. Brittany Webb, Evelyn and Will Kaplan Curator of Twentieth-Century Art and the John Rhoden Collection, and the dedicated team behind this exhibition 🙌👏

Determined to Be is on view until April 7, 2024. Plan your visit today!

PAFA joins the city of Philadelphia in mourning the passing of Dr Constance Clayton.

It is with great sadness that PAFA joins in mourning the death of Dr. Constance E. Clayton, Philadelphia’s first Black and female schools’ superintendent and longtime collector of African American art.

In 2019, Dr. Clayton gifted to PAFA a collection of 78 paintings, works on paper and sculptures by African American artists in loving memory of her mother Mrs. Williabell Clayton. Dr. Clayton was an advocate for increased prominence of African American art in museums, exhibitions and curatorial staff. She stated that when museums incorporate artists of color, “They say to African American children: ‘Somebody who looks like me did this, and I can do this too.’”

In 2020, PAFA celebrated this gift through an exhibition of the works, Awakened in You: The Collection of Dr. Constance E. Clayton. The collection includes the artists Henry Ossawa Tanner, Edward Bannister, Romare Bearden, Sam Gilliam, Augusta Savage, Dox Thrash, Laura Wheeler Waring and Charles White among others. Dr. Clayton said at the time, that she thought it was important to share the collection so that the larger community would be able to see it, enjoy it and realize that African Americans has something special to contribute to culture.

As a memorial to Dr. Clayton’s life’s work, PAFA will be exhibiting two sculptures from the Clayton collection: Gamin (https://bit.ly/46hupzw) by Augusta Savage and Slave Boy (https://bit.ly/3RpZYmx) by May Howard Jackson. The works will be on view in the Henry Luce Sculpture Study Center on the 2nd floor of PAFA’s Hamilton Building through November 26, 2023.

Since we met at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the late 1970’s, my dear friend Kurt Solmssen, has transformed the places of his life into images of light, calm and peace. Gazing upon his paintings, your heart may skip a beat as when you see a person of particular beauty, but your mind will find rest.

PAFA has been hosting a series of artist curated shows on the 2nd floor of the Hamilton building. I have filmed shows curated by artists Patrick Connors and Scott Noel. There is a different insight that artists can bring, they understand first hand how art is made. Plus it has been a great showcase of regional talent. The latest is a show on landscape put together by Doug Martenson. I urge PAFA to continue these wonderful shows.
