"I am learning so much in the class...It would have been impossible to take an in-person class, as much as I love them, at PAFA. So, being able to take your "Color for painters" class in the Fall of 2021 and now "Alla Prima Landscapes" on zoom have been real treats." Academy Generations | PAFA - Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

Assembled by PAFA grad and Continuing Education faculty member, Fred Danziger, the latest exhibition in the Alumni Gallery "Academy Generations" shows an authentic snapshot of teacher/student, classmate/classmate and alumni/institution connectedness from the late 1930s up to the work of current students. We see with this eclectic work, the “unbroken line” of artists working, teaching and supporting each other, all held together by their love of art and their common element of lineage at PAFA.

This exhibit is not about a particular aesthetic or artist. Assembled by PAFA grad and Continuing Education faculty member, Fred Danziger, Academy Generations shows how the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, since 1805, has nourished American art as one of the premier museums and art schools in....

Read about painting faculty Peter Van Dyck in the latest edition of ! "Van Dyck’s process brings whoever is watching into soft afternoons and empty streets touched with the light melancholy of contemplative solitude. spring '21 — The Space for Creative Black Imagination

Join us for these important conversations on the theme "Blk Freedoms/Blk Time" on June 16, June 21, and June 23. Colleagues from PAFA, MassArt and MICA will revisit and critically rethink the historic ruptures of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, the Tulsa Massacre of 1921, and Juneteenth, 1865. In the intimate context of these workshop gatherings we hope to both commemorate Black lives relegated to the death worlds of racial slavery, apartheid and white supremacy, and reaffirm (& reimagine) the possibilities of Black Freedom/Black Time.

In each workshop, a group of invited guests will present an object of their choosing - an ornament, artwork, film, song or text - and reflect on the ways in which it animates key concepts or practices they associate with these histories of struggle, loss and aspiration, and their resonance in the present.

Register today:

Cohosts:
Dr. Raél Jero Salley
Director of The Space for Creative Black Imagination
Chair, Department of Art History, Theory & Criticism at MICA

Dr. Rónké Òké
Director of DEIB & Deputy TIX Coordinator
Assistant Professor of Liberal Arts at PAFA

Further, the museum will be closed on Friday, June 18 (including for staff as a paid holiday) to facilitate the redirection of our community's focus towards these events at The Space for Creative Black Imagination, as well as any other commemorations. We will be sharing more Juneteenth events local to Philadelphia on this page.

PAFA's student-run art journal, dumb, is currently accepting submissions for Issue 2.⠀

📮 Submit your contributions at the link in bio—the deadline is March 21.⠀

Open to the PAFA community at-large: students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, family, etc. ⠀

All forms of image and text, as well as digital media, video, and audio (including reproductions, reprints, comparative analyses of published works, found art, and more) are accepted.⠀

The theme of the first issue was entirely open, and we want to keep it that way. However, in brainstorming about the second issue the editors thought about the opposite of openness. ⠀

What are the structures that occlude passages? What separates and prevents connection by keeping subjects apart? How can boundaries be pushed, and limits be expanded? What might be possible in the overlap? And what paths can never be crossed? ⠀

This issue will focus on borders; however, the theme remains suspended and open. So, feel free with your submissions, and we are excited to bring the work of our extended community together on this print and digital platform.

Create a new survey on your own or with others at the same time. Choose from a variety of survey types and analyze results in Google Forms. Free from Google.

PAFA has been hosting a series of artist curated shows on the 2nd floor of the Hamilton building. I have filmed shows curated by artists Patrick Connors and Scott Noel. There is a different insight that artists can bring, they understand first hand how art is made. Plus it has been a great showcase of regional talent. The latest is a show on landscape put together by Doug Martenson. I urge PAFA to continue these wonderful shows.
