Because strict plantation economies in the colonial Caribbean discouraged leisurely or profitable fine art, early visual expression by enslaved populations was largely channeled into performance art, costuming, and ephemeral traditions like Afro-Caribbean Art of Jamaica Carnival.According to Afro-Caribbean Art of Jamaica, “Plantation economies could ill afford art in the leisurely sense, so their early forms of expression were manifested in performance art such as carnival.”
