"Kurt Kauper is a painter whose work had, for the past fifteen years, been images of familiar cultural icons - opera divas, Cary Grant, hockey players, and Barack and Michelle Obama – seen in a variety of unfamiliar ways. His figure paintings of historical and imagined people tend to leave expectations unfulfilled, and elide simple categorization. In contradistinction to his clear and precise articulations of form, Kauper’s content is characterized by indeterminacy, unintentionality, ambiguity, fluidity, destabilization, strangeness, amorality, uselessness, and the neutral."

💥 Class is in full swing in level one with gesture drawings and charcoal wipe-outs!
Students learn how to capture the gesture of a pose by utilizing a simple framework of linear lines and salient landmarks of the figure.
Using a linear approach trains the eye to see critical information without being impeded by unnecessary detail. Once basic proportions and gesture are established, students begin to shift into structural and anatomical thinking. In due course, these seemingly opposing modes will marry, informing one another from the onset.

🎨 You’re not going to want to miss this HIGHLY informative workshop, October 14th-16th, regarding best painting practices with experts from Natural Pigments! Located on the west coast, they won’t be back to visit for another seven years! 😱
🔥THIS IS YOUR CHANCE to pick the brains of George O’Hanlon and Tatiana Zaytseva for best painting practices based on conservation research.
“Natural Pigments spent years developing a technical workshop to teach skills that are not taught in art schools and universities—a thorough understanding of artists’ materials and tools, what they are designed to do, when to choose them and how to provide considerable longevity to your finished work. This workshop covers the most important aspects of painting that have proven to be the best practices over the centuries.
This informative workshop includes all aspects of constructing a painting, from the support and ground to the final layers. Practical procedures will be clearly explained and demonstrated on building your oil paintings based on conservation research during the past century. This workshop is designed for painters of all mediums, but particular emphasis will be given to oil painting.”
