Artist statement:
"I love Philly, also referred to as "The city of neighborhoods". In creating these maps, I've learned a ton of local history through research and input from locals on what makes each neighborhood so special. The content on each map is slightly different but I try to include local history, landmarks, parks and even kitschy cartoons depicting local debates on neighborhood boundaries! The maps are sort of like a timestamp, I think it will be interesting to see how the neighborhoods change over time. I have illustrated about 13 Philly neighborhood maps but there are still so many more to do!"

Welcome to all our new followers! Quite a few new-in-'22, so here's a lil snapshot of NMOP. If you haven't visited us yet, let's make a date. We're here all weekend (Fri-Sun). We've got a parking lot + public transit options. We're a $10 ticket (kids enter 4 free). We share a roof with @nextfab_phl, @sorynez, @beaty_american, @theresourceexchange, @keystone.bike, so you can really make a day of it: shopping, bike tune-up, food & drinks + the history, culture, and beauty of vintage Philly neon.
Next weekend we open our new exhibit with the reception on Saturday, Jan 29th, from 1pm to 4pm. Entitled NEON CURRENTS, the show features 8 contemporary neon artists. Very exciting. More to come on that. Stay tuned!
An ode to the Trolley Car Diner. It was one of the last 5-point neon animations found in Philly and the highlight of a career in neon for NMOP founder Len Davidson. Watch as we plot the removal of the neon, labeling each glass unit and transformer.
Though multi-point animated neon was frequently used from the 1930s into the '60s, it's hardly ever seen now. The only recent ones in the area that come to mind, other than the now defunct Trolley Car, are the 16-point animations at Iovine Brothers Produce in Reading Terminal Market. There's also the Giles & Ransom bulldozer in Bensalem, but that dates back to the 1940s.
It's sad to see Philly's street life lose this neon spectacular, but hopefully it will emerge from storage someday and be relit. And perhaps there are new neon extravaganzas cropping up in the city...more on that in our next chapter.
