Art-ish FEATURE time!! Francisco Garcia’s was served at Art-ish! He founded Strivers' Row , Philly's first Latino-Owned distillery! Here’s more from the distiller himself:

1. What’s your art form: My art is distilling spirits. I make spiced whiskey, rum, and soon single malt whiskey!

2. What projects/events do you have coming up: I’m planning to open a tasting room!

3. What do you love about the PMA & YFs: I love that the Museum and Young Friends support local small businesses and creatives!

4. What’s the best part of being a Philly-based maker: Philly-based makers benefit from an active community that goes out of its way to boost us.

5. What’s one Philly artist that everyone should know: Everyone should know Radhi Fernandez at The Faiya Co .co. He’s going to do big things with food!

Today’s !! Raheem Manning ! He runs and is a presence on the YFs advisory committee. Here’s more!

How many yrs have you been a YF: This is my 1st year.

Why did you join? What's the best part about it: I joined to become better connected with the museum. I’m not the biggest contemporary art buff, but I love the cultural events that the museum hosts and as a YF I get to experience the museum like never before through the programming and access to the exhibits.

What's been your fav YF event: Art-ish ofc is my fav because it’s new & fresh and brings a different twist to what the museum usually offers.

Coolest galleries at the PMA: The New Early American Gallery is really dope.

Fav spot in Philly: JG Sky High on top of the four seasons. The view is breathtaking.

Name a Philly cultural org that everyone should know about: Rec Philly ! They do an amazing job supporting artists in the area!

feature alert! Today’s feature is jeweler Devin McNutt . She had a demo table at Art-ish and is in . Here’s more from Devin herself!

1. What’s your art form: I’m a jeweler, specializing in upcycling vintage tins. I collect intricately patterned tins manufactured in the 1960s and 70s, which were used to store tea, cookies, and candy. Then I transform these colorful pieces of nostalgia into timeless jewelry.

2. What projects do you have coming up: As a full-time maker, the summer months are spent preparing for the busy holiday season. During this time of year, I’m not only creating jewelry, but also holiday ornaments. Sketching out and fabricating new ornament designs is something I always look forward to. A new project in the works that I’m especially excited about is Halloween ornaments!

3. What do you love about the PMA: Growing up in Philly, the PMA holds a special place in my heart. I’ve been going since I was a kid and now I love bringing my own children there as a parent.
4. What’s the best part about being a Philly-based maker: Definitely the artist community. I’ve met folks in so many different creative fields that I’m honored to now call my friends. We support each other by offering advice, experiences, honest feedback, and (the much needed, yet often overlooked) words of encouragement.

5. Young Friends love to spread the love in the arts community. What’s one Philly artist that everyone should know: I’m a huge fan of Emily Ennulat-Lustine . She makes the most incredible botanically inspired encaustic paintings and illustrations. Emily’s work transports me to a sun-filled garden brimming with color and the scents of summer.

feature! To kick off 4th of July weekend, YFs are celebrating the Philly art community and our Art-ish stars. Up 1st is , who is performing personalized poems TONIGHT at Oval XP on the Parkway, 5-8pm *free entry* Here’s more from the poet himself:

1. What’s your art form: I write poetry on demand on a typewriter in public spaces. Topics range from birthdays and new beginnings to heavier themes, like grief and heartbreak. In setting up around the city, I love to cultivate an immersive experience around the poem that offers healing through connection.

2. What projects do you have coming up: This Fall I’ll be curating the 2nd year of the . My neighborhood will be invited to use typewriters to write a poem about “Value,” as a response to rising inflation. The installation will pop up in several locations and the final poem will be published as a zine.

3. What do you love about the PMA and YFs: I love the architecture of the PMA and how each room transports you into another era and a different culture. Young Friends has done an amazing job at making art accessible and inviting new audiences into the wonder of art.

4. What’s the best part about being a Philly-based artist: Philly is a big city with a lot of heart and a tight-knit community to grow with. More recently, I’ve witnessed here an emphasis on art being used to make an impact in our neighborhoods. Everything from countering gun crime to sharing distinct cultural identities. In Philly, art has become more than just a celebration inside the galleries. It spills into the streets and uplifts our everyday lives.

5. Young Friends love to spread the love in the arts community. What’s one Philly artist that everyone should know: . He uses glass and acrylic in his paintings, providing reflections on pop culture and political. Recently, he’s even featured some pop remixes of paintings in the PMA collection!

: Enjoy a moment of quiet with a visit to the Ceremonial Teahouse: Sunkaraku (Evanescent Joys). Originally built in about 1917 by Japanese architect Ögi Rodö, the Sunkaraku teahouse was sold to the museum in 1928 and installed nearly 30 years later in 1957. It is the only work by Rodö outside Japan. The tea ceremony offers a temporary respite from the complexities of daily life and everything inside the tearoom was planned to stimulate the mind and delight the eye.

A woman in the driver's seat. Experience ’s flair for digging into an ordinary moment and distilling its emotions in “A Woman and a Girl Driving” during your next visit to the museum. Located in gallery 211 on the second floor, the painting depicts an outing in the Bois de Boulogne, a park on the western edge of Paris. The driver is Lydia Cassatt, sister of the artist, and the girl seated beside her is Odile Fèvre, niece of the painter Edgar Degas.

It really is the roaring 20s here in Philadelphia! Thank you so much to the Young Friends of the Philadelphia Museum of Art for inviting me to be a part of the Art-ish art salon last night at Philadelphia Museum of Art. What a dream!

Ever since I set eyes on the newly-opened Vaulted Walkway last year, I knew its gilded arches were ripe for gathering. It was exhilarating to celebrate the resilience of the arts here in my home city alongside so many of its treasured creatives and culture makers. The scene was epic!

You ever seen the remake of The Great Gatsby? I’ve been waiting to attend a party that extravagant since I first read the book in high school.

We’ve survived a plague and hopefully the threat of another world war. I dream that we are entering a golden age. One that is more accessible and provides inspired connection to the masses from all backgrounds and identities. Giving voice to all people of the world.

I mused upon the portrait of a favorite poet, Maya Angelou, whose birthday we celebrate on April 5th, and let the poems roll off the typewriter filled with heart and soul. Nearby my Typewriter Altar gathered energy. A postcard of the Yosh*toshi woodblock “The Heian Poet Yasumasa Playing the Flute by Moonlight, Subduing the Bandit Yasusuke with His Music” placed at its base. This personification of the Poet Warrior, something I attempt to embody as I try to manifest peace through writing poetry.

As guests leaned in to listen to poems about Love and Heartbreak, Birthdays and Anniversaries, Art and Film, you could feel the high frequencies bounce sonically all around the room.

This space that was once a subway stop, transporting us now to a higher awareness. In tune to the art. To the community. To the possibility of imagination.

    Spring really is in bloom.
