Tomorrow is the opening of the Mysteries, Copies, and Forgeries exhibition.

This exhibit displays artworks that may not be what they appear to be. Are these artworks genuine pieces, or did a forger create them? Will we ever know the answers? Or will they remain a mystery?

See if you can tell by visiting the Museum.

What counts as q***r art?

Join us as we explore that question in the next Member Talk on June 23 at Noon with Lily F. Scott, where we'll look at the LGBTQIA+ art in the museum's collection. We will examine pieces created by artists such as Zoe Leonard and Marsden Hartley and those that showcase individuals like Sappho and James Baldwin.

We use the word "q***r" to respectfully acknowledge the community's reclamation of the term.

Mural Arts invites you to help support them in celebrating our community's voices, stories, and murals! Join them for Wall Ball on Thursday, April 27, 2023, from 7:30–10:30 PM!

Wall Ball is an annual Mural Arts event that recognizes the joyous ways art brings us together through its Community Murals Program. Collaborating with community members, Community Murals empowers individuals with a sense of ownership over their physical space through art that represents the complex diversity and beauty of who we are, who we have been, and where we are going.

Come along as they revive the hit series, Def Poetry, presented by Danny Simmons, honoring Sonia Sanchez. Originally a spoken word poetry television series hosted by hip-hop artist and activist Mos Def, this series features performances by established and up-and-coming spoken word poets with special performances by many well-known actors and musicians. The evening will also feature their very own muralists with live-painting activations, music, and other not-to-miss surprises.

This is the party of poetry jam royalty; you won't want to miss it. Buy your tickets by clicking the link in bio.

Lindsay Young:

I’ve been involved with the Young Friends for seven years, and showing up to that first meeting was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s been a great way to get more involved in my city and community, as well as to make some genuinely rewarding friendships and memories. Art-ish is as it sounds. It’s a celebration of art but not only in the ways often associated with a traditional art museum-- i.e., going on a guided tour and observing paintings and sculptures. This event celebrates
those traditional ideas but dives further into the “-ish” of it all to include musical performances, culinary demonstrations, and activations by local Philly
artists. This distinction between art as traditional works and art as
everything else in life served as an inspiration for this year’s event theme
of duality- or the opposition or contrast between two concepts or two aspects of something. I hope you join us on March 25th to continue your own journey with the museum, the Young Friends, Art-ish, and the idea of duality.

Red-to-White Duality

The Blue Story 2023/24 wine collection "Lady in Red" will be featured in "Art-ish" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on March 25th. The collection is a tribute to the art lovers who see "Lady in Red" paintings and value the excellence the power that red-to-white colors have in creating timeless harmony and beauty in life. Because of the excellence the power of red-to-white color dynamics have in creating characters, we see class, love, independence, and joy in the painting collection. In the "Lady in Red" wine collection created by Blue Story, we have included world-famous wines ranging from European Burgundy and Rosé to American Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc, to celebrate the red-to-white color excellence valued by the art lovers who make art come alive.

Art-ish Artist Spotlight
Shakira Hunt and 7godxx

Experiential curators/ artists Shakira Hunt and 7god focus on storytelling through their practices of visual art and digital media with a collective goal to amplify and support the advancement of artists, specifically black voices through visual art, education, and community. Their work focuses on mental health and wellness - challenging identity, and education through the mediums of paint, photography, creative direction and film. Their works and experiences as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) help to illustrate and construct narratives that challenge America's status quo such as (classism, gender, and race).

Shakira Hunt and 7God explore the in-between, of their individual works and practices through visual art and photography, bringing them together collaboratively with Shakira's "Give me my flowers" photography series, and 7God's "Every genius needs therapy" mixed media work.

Each artist has explored their various disciplines to understand at a deeper level the masculine experiences via trauma and joy through the black and brown lens.

7God’s work and purpose of “Every Genius Needs Therapy'', is to bring more awareness to mental illness by allowing the viewer to build a deeper understanding and perspective surrounding the black male experience.

Through Shakira’s “Give Me My Flowers”, she illustrates the idea of masculinity and how it is often perceived, from being void of emotion sensitivity, vulnerability, and having a hard exterior. Conceptually, deciding to use the flower play to juxtapose the idea with softness, a simplistic background setup with fabrics, and soft movements from the subjects - all of which aid to the feminine side of male.

It really is the roaring 20s here in Philadelphia! Thank you so much to the Young Friends of the Philadelphia Museum of Art for inviting me to be a part of the Art-ish art salon last night at Philadelphia Museum of Art. What a dream!

Ever since I set eyes on the newly-opened Vaulted Walkway last year, I knew its gilded arches were ripe for gathering. It was exhilarating to celebrate the resilience of the arts here in my home city alongside so many of its treasured creatives and culture makers. The scene was epic!

You ever seen the remake of The Great Gatsby? I’ve been waiting to attend a party that extravagant since I first read the book in high school.

We’ve survived a plague and hopefully the threat of another world war. I dream that we are entering a golden age. One that is more accessible and provides inspired connection to the masses from all backgrounds and identities. Giving voice to all people of the world.

I mused upon the portrait of a favorite poet, Maya Angelou, whose birthday we celebrate on April 5th, and let the poems roll off the typewriter filled with heart and soul. Nearby my Typewriter Altar gathered energy. A postcard of the Yosh*toshi woodblock “The Heian Poet Yasumasa Playing the Flute by Moonlight, Subduing the Bandit Yasusuke with His Music” placed at its base. This personification of the Poet Warrior, something I attempt to embody as I try to manifest peace through writing poetry.

As guests leaned in to listen to poems about Love and Heartbreak, Birthdays and Anniversaries, Art and Film, you could feel the high frequencies bounce sonically all around the room.

This space that was once a subway stop, transporting us now to a higher awareness. In tune to the art. To the community. To the possibility of imagination.

    Spring really is in bloom.
