Pella Historical Museum and Tulip Time

Pella Historical Museum and Tulip Time The Pella Historical Society & Museums preserves and promotes Pella's Dutch heritage and the history of Pella, Iowa.

The Pella Historical Society and Museum operates the Pella Historical Village Museum, Vermeer Windmill and Scholte House Museum. The Society sponsors and operates community events such as the Pella Tulip Time Festival, Kermis and Dutch Day Camp, Fall Festival, Sinterklaas Celebration, and Christmas Walk.

The Pella Tulip Time festival was awarded "#1 Event in the Red Rock Area" by the Marion County Development Comission. Along with operating the Historical Village, Windmill and Scholte house we offer tours to visitors! Admission: 0-4 Free 5-11 $2.00 12-College $6.00 Adults $10 Those admission prices include a Timeline video highlighting the history of Pella and a guided tour through the windmill and Miniature Village. Along with that we have a self-guided tour through our Historical Village. We have more than 20 buildings on campus! Heritage hall features a Dutch Costume exhibit, a music room and the history of Tulip Time. Another exciting feature in the Village is the childhood home of Wyatt Earp. Another tour option is our combo pass: 0-4 Free 5-11 $4 12-18 $8 Adults $13 A combo pass includes both the guided Windmill Tour and the self-guided Village tour, and a tour of the founder of Pella's original home, The Scholte House. This house was built in 1848 by the founder of Pella, Dominie Scholte. It features a President Lincoln exhibit because of the close friendship he and Dominie had. This tour also includes a self-guided tour of the Scholte Gardens.

Mission: Pella Historical Society & Museums preserves and promotes the Dutch heritage and the history of Pella, Iowa.

We've got some dancing queens in the house! Our Pella Community High School Tulip Court members danced the night away at the father- daughter dance while our Pella Christian Tulip Court members were at prom!

One of the best parts about the Tulip Court is the ministry opportunities to young and old. Whether it be at hospitals, civic groups, or schools it's such a rewarding experience!

Happy prom season! With local proms upon us this weekend, we wanted to let you know that Pella Historical isn't able to accommodate prom goers for pictures.

Our pond is torn up, many of the bricks have been displaced, and much of the Village is taped off. It would be dangerous to be out there on high heels and long dresses!

Thanks for your understanding.

We are so excited to receive a collection of Gouda Pottery from Richard Dexter, of Beloit, Wisconsin. He donated more than 215 pieces to PHSM.

Gouda pottery was a clay pottery produced around the Gouda area in the Netherlands between the late 1800s and up to the 1960s. It's known for its bright colors and curvaceous designs.

Thank you to Mr. Dexter as well as to Anton and Carolyn Hol, who volunteered to pick it up and deliver it to us. We will have the pottery displayed by Tulip Time!

We are glad to report that the new music has arrived from Belgium in a small, very heavy box. And in case you ever wanted to know what the music for Goliath looked like, it comes in a small book with accordion-type panels, punched out in "notes." This is fed into Goliath.

This one is "Alexander's Ragtime Band." Can't wait to hear all of them at Tulip Time!

Today is International Women's Day. We here at PHSM honor the women throughout Pella's history who have made our city what it is today.

To the women who were here before the Dutch arrived--Nancy Tuttle, Sarah Nossaman, Mrs. Levi Nossaman (whose first name is lost to history), Emily Post, and others--and taught the Dutch women how to be homesteaders.

To the Dutch immigrant women who kept house with next to nothing.

To business women like Sybertje Viersen, who left land and money for books for a library, and who met with Andrew Carnegie herself and persuaded him to donate the building, so that we would have a place of knowledge and information.

To women like Drusilla Stoddard who kept the light shining at Central College through the Civil War and nursed it along during some dark hours.

To the many women over the years who have had a passion for Pella Historical and have given their time, talents, and treasure.

To the women who let down hems in Dutch costume pants and figure out a way to get the costumes their kids need each year.

To all of these women, we say thank you. Your sacrifices have not gone unnoticed.

A couple of us representing PHSM toured the Kalona Historical Society this morning, doing a benchmarking of a museum similar to ours. The KHS houses more than 800 antique quilts, and we were blown away by their storage area. The quilt shown was a sunburst quilt from the 1830s.
