🇬🇧 Under the German occupation, the curfew was set at midnight and the last metro ran at 11 p.m. Shows continued, but the same singers and chansonniers promoted by the Regime performed every night in the music halls of the Grands Boulevards, gradually abandoned by Parisians. When Paris was liberated at the end of August 1944, the city’s youth regained its vigour. Alongside them, Parisians longed to be free and to finally reclaim their night-time pleasures set to the rhythm of performances.

🇪🇸 Bajo la ocupación alemana, el toque de queda era a medianoche y el último metro pasaba a las 23 h. Los espectáculos persistían, pero eran los mismos cantantes y humoristas promovidos por el Régimen quienes actuaban cada noche en los music-halls de los Grandes Bulevares, poco a poco abandonados por los parisinos. Con la liberación de París a finales de agosto de 1944, la juventud parisina recuperó su vigor. Con ella, los parisinos quisieron liberarse y, por fin, recuperar sus placeres nocturnos marcados por el ritmo de los espectáculos.

🇫🇷 Sous l'occupation allemande, le couvre-feu est à minuit et le dernier métro à 23h. Les spectacles subsistent mais ce sont les mêmes chanteurs et chansonniers promus par le Régime qui s'exhibent chaque soir dans les music-halls des Grands Boulevards, peu à peu délaissés des Parisiens. À la libération de Paris fin août 1944, la jeunesse parisienne retrouvera sa vigueur. Avec elle, les Parisiens veulent se libérer et enfin retrouver leurs plaisirs nocturnes rythmés par les spectacles.

🇺🇸 "My father, Walt Girdner, was born in an iron bathtub in central Iowa in 1922. The house stood at a country crossroads, surrounded by cornfields as far as the eye could see.
Years later, we stopped by that same house outside Earlham. The people living there kindly let us in. My father pointed to the tub and said, “That’s where I was born.”
There was still nothing but cornfields all around.
That quiet, humble beginning shaped a man who would go on to photograph postwar Paris with an outsider’s eye and an artist’s soul."

🇪🇸 "Mi padre, Walt Girdner, nació en una bañera de hierro, en el centro de Iowa en 1922. La casa, de madera, dotada de un gran porche, se encontraba en un estrecho cruce rural; estaba rodeada de campos de maíz hasta donde alcanzaba la vista.
Años más t**de, volvimos a pasar por esa misma casa, ubicada cerca de Earlham. Los habitantes nos dejaron entrar amablemente. Mi padre señaló la bañera y me dijo: «Ahí nací yo.»
Alrededor, solos, seguían los campos de maíz.
De ese nacimiento sencillo, nació un joven artista que acabaría capturando el París de la posguerra en blanco y negro, con una mirada fresca."

🇫🇷 « Mon père, Walt Girdner, est né dans une baignoire en fer, dans le centre de l’Iowa, en 1922. La maison, en bois, dotée d'un grand porche, se trouvait à un étroit croisement de campagne ; elle était entourée de champs de maïs à perte de vue.
Des années plus t**d, nous sommes retournés devant cette même maison, située près d’Earlham. Les habitants nous ont gentiment laissés entrer. Mon père a pointé la baignoire du doigt et m’a dit : « C’est là que je suis né. »
Autour, toujours, seuls les champs de maïs.
De cette naissance simple, est né un jeune artiste qui allait capturer le Paris de l’après-guerre en noir et blanc, avec un regard neuf.»
