GAMBLE HOUSE STAFF FAVORITE FROM JULIE OÑATE (Sales Associate): Naturally the exterior of the Gamble House itself is a favorite for most, but for me it’s this special, almost rare glow, just after the house is closed for the day. This gorgeous cornflower blue sky usually only appears in twilight hour of winter so I try to capture it every chance I get - the first photo was from December and the second from January.

💡TRIVIA ANSWER 🔍 This is a round opening connecting to a chimney flue into which the pipe of a cast iron or similar stove would be attached. There are at least two in the house: One is in the east wall of the laundry room over the new stove, and the other, more famously, is in the tile on the east wall of Aunt Julia’s room.

This film, produced by architectural historian Esther McCoy, documents the Walter Luther Dodge house in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, and the life of its architect, Irving John Gill. The film was made to advocate for its preservation during a 7-year battle to save it from the wrecking ball. The campaign failed, and the house was destroyed in 1970. This film, created to help save the house, now serves as the building’s best surviving visual record. GAMBLE HOUSE STAFF FAVORITE FROM TED BOSLEY (CEO/Executive Director):The bedroom chiffonier. I’m especially fond of the cabinet door details. The whole piece is exquisitely beautiful and a virtuoso work of craft, using a variety of woods and semi-precious stones. After he’d seen pieces being made for the Gambles’ bedroom, English architect C.R. Ashbee declared it “the best and most characteristic furniture I have seen in this country…quite up to our best English craftsmanship…”.

HARWELL HAMILTON HARRIS
Virtually forgotten by the profession and the press during the 1920s and 1930s, the Greenes’ work was “rediscovered” in the 1940s by a small group of architects and critics who rejected the notion that good modernist design could only come from Europe. No longer portrayed as a vestige of the past, their work was suddenly promoted as a forward-looking inspiration for American modernism. Elizabeth Gordon, editor of House Beautiful, championed them in the pages of her influential magazine, along with the work of younger California architects who also worked in wood, including Harwell Hamilton Harris (1903–1990).

Spring weather in Pasadena is perfect, with comfortable, warm temperatures. But the summer is quite hot! How did they go about cooling the Gamble House during the summer months?
Just curious if there any existing photographs of the interior of the house just before it was donated? I seem to recall hearing that a good portion of the hall furniture was stored in the attic towards the end of the Gamble families tenure in the house. It probably wasn't very flattering for I have images of ugly lazy boy type furniture with old TV's with rabbit ears. But it still be interesting to see what it was like.
