Palm Springs is internationally known as an LGBTQ community and destination. Check out this cool panel discussion to learn how local media boosted its reputation.

“The Power of Story: How Local Media Put Gay Palm Springs on the Map” should be an “edutaining” event Thursday at the Palm Springs Cultural Center.

Brad Fuhr, owner-operator of KGAY 106.5 Palm Springs and the Gay Desert Guide will moderate the 6-8 p.m. panel discussion featuring Denise Goolsby, a former Desert Sun colleague now managing the City of Palm Springs’ Office of Neighborhoods, Nino Eilets, publisher of The Standard magazine for LGBTQ news, and myself.

It will be educational because the LGBTQ+ community has changed dramatically since David Wallace chronicled it in his 2008 book, “A City Comes Out: How Celebrities Made Palm Springs A Gay and Le***an Paradise.” And the local media today is unrecognizable.

Back in 2008, when the California Supreme Court first declared bans on same-s*x marriage unconstitutional, bands promoted new music by recording a video and supporting it with newspaper and radio coverage. Now you drop a dance video on TikTok. To see transgender news reported by a trans person, the Washington Post says you should catch Keffals on Twitch. Twitch is a streaming service featuring young people playing video games.

“The Power of Story” also will be entertaining because the questions could have fuses attached.

I just heard an ESPN pundit say his philosophy is, “Fear the known and leave the unknown alone.” But panel discussions should offer a fearless free-flow of information. That could lead to enlightenment or the kind of implosion Dave Chappelle has experienced.

Two years ago, I might have agreed with Chappelle that the LGBTQ+ community has achieved civil rights faster than the African Americans. But now, with all the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and court decisions coming down, and today’s approval of reparations for descendants of the owners of Bruce’s Beach, I don’t know. I look forward to hearing what the panel thinks.

I just hope I’m not held accountable for Desert Sun practices during my early years at that paper. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, we had two consecutive LGBTQ executive editors who helped navigate us through the systemic homophobia that existed in Palm Springs. Before that, we had an executive editor with a great relationship with her gay son. But newspapers are usually directed by corporate leaders with conservative ideals, and employees generally do what we our bosses tell us to do.

I was known as the Grim Reaper at The Desert Sun because I was assigned to write news obituaries for most of the celebrities who lived in the valley. But I look back to 1999 and wonder why I didn’t write a news obit for Gloria Greene, who was probably the godmother of the LGBTQ+ community. I wasn’t assigned to write it, but I didn’t have the institutional knowledge to insist on a written appreciation for her.

I had good relationships with many gay figures on my arts and entertainment beat. The photo below was taken during my last Q&A with Tab Hunter in 2018. He didn’t like discussing his s*xuality. But he talked about it after the culture changed, saying Palm Springs was where he came to hide and play.

Better arrive early for this free event being produced by David Gray. Most of the tickets are already sold out.

In Newly Found Audio, A Forgotten Civil Rights Leader Says Coming Out 'Was An Absolute Necessity'

As we remember human rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., let us not forget that one of his most important advisers and the architect of the March on Washington was a brilliant black gay man by the name of Bayard Rustin. https://www.npr.org/2019/01/06/682598649/in-newly-found-audio-a-forgotten-civil-rights-leader-says-coming-out-was-an-abso

The Boys in the Band (2020)

Have you seen the gay classic "The Boys in the Band" now playing on Netflix (or perhaps earlier on Broadway)? One noticeable change from the original film is that Ryan Murphy and team managed to quell some of the venom and show moments of love among a few of the friends. What did you think? Did you have a favorite character?

More than fifty years after Mart Crowley's play became an unexpected smash hit for putting gay men's lives center stage with honesty and humor, THE BOYS IN THE BAND returns to the screen in a new adaptation that reunites acclaimed director Joe Mantello with the all-star cast of the Tony-winning, 201...

While the recent death of Marilyn Cazares is still being investigated, what we do know is this:
Human Rights Campaign: "It is clear that fatal violence disproportionately affects transgender women of color -- particularly Black transgender women -- and that the intersections of racism, s*xism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and unchecked access to guns conspire to deprive them of employment, housing, healthcare and other necessities."

How LGBTQ+ People Can Get Help and Resources During Coronavirus

If you're LGBTQ and sheltering-in-place as a part of COVID-19 prevention, here's some interesting reading. One addresses pandemic-related resources to access as LGBTQ centers across the nation close; the other looks at the impact on hooking up:

N.J. bans gay and transgender 'panic defenses'

In the past year, six states have joined California in banning the absurd legal defense of gay or transgender panic -- meaning no one can use a victim's s*xual orientation or identity as an excusable reason for acting violently toward them. Yep, it happened that recently -- and California only banned it in 2014.

New Jersey is now the ninth state to ban the controversial legal strategy.
