Art Collections at Chapman University

Phyllis and Ross Escalette became interested in the art displayed at Chapman, and were intrigued by its accessibility to both the campus and local communities and its potential as an educational and cultural resource. The Escalettes established an endowment for the collection, and in 2010, it was dedicated and renamed the Phyllis and Ross Escalette Permanent Collection of Art in honor of their generosity. Funds generated by the Escalette Permanent Art Collection Endowment continue to support the operation and expansion of the collection. Beckman Hall is home to a large selection of works from the Escalette Collection, where it is seen by students, faculty, and visitors every day. The art is also displayed throughout campus, including Moulton Hall, 633 W. Palm, and the Harry and Diane Rinker Health Science Campus in Irvine.

Happy grand opening to the Keck Center of Science and Engineering! It was an honor and a blast to choose the art that is now hung proudly in the halls, and we even got a couple new pieces that you absolutely have to check out! Shown here are pieces by Chapman alum Kellan Shanahan on the third floor. Go take a look at these prints yourself, and make sure not to miss out on "Chappy" the ancient fish fossil, the moving lenticular mural, and the hallway dedicated to Women in Science. Head over to the Keck to see science and art intermingling - with old and new pieces alike!

Regionalism - Its role in defining

"Regionalism became entrenched in a debate over what kind of art was to become the new American modern art.The Regionalists, whose work was realist, centered on rural life, and promoted by conservative critics, was positioned at one end of the spectrum while abstract artists, who primarily lived in New York and were promoted by more Pro-Modernist, liberal critics, was positioned at the opposite end. As the Abstract Expressionists emerged, Pro-Modernist critics used their influence in the art world to advocate abstract art over Regionalism." Jessica Bocinski, CU Student
