In Nebraska, records show the arrival of Mexican Immigrants began near the end of the 1890’s through early 1900’s. Since then, the Mexican community has grown greatly. Cultural celebrations like Cinco de Mayo started off as small gatherings run by Our Lady of Guadalupe (OLG) then as the community needs changed and grew, so did festival and celebrations adapted as well.

The Chicano Awareness Center (CAC) started around the late 1960’s, records indicating 1968. The CAC served the latino community that began growing in South Omaha since the late 1890’s to early 1900’s.

The CAC and OLG were the two main organizations that served the Mexican community in South Omaha during this time.

Celebrations like Cinco de Mayo, Fiestas Patrias, or annual OLG celebrations have fostered the South Omaha spirit for decades. They’ve proven to be crucial to the vibrant tapestry and livelihood that makes up what we know as South Omaha today.

The 1950’s era in Omaha for Mexican musicians is one to remember. To begin, the Mexican community was firmly established in South Omaha, with the first generation wave of immigrants keeping musical traditions alive and thriving. Pictured above are the members of a local South Omaha band; Arturo Huerta, Don Frank ‘Chicho’ Gomez, Louis Magallenes, and Ruth Francis ‘Betty” Martin Hilario. This was a transformative era, with the popularization the show ’I Love Lucy’ which propelled the economic development of latin businesses in the South Omaha area.

Baile Folklórico has been a cherished and essential piece of Mexican culture for centuries. We have record of baile folklórico being in around since the 1930’s right here in Omaha. To this day, this tradition remains alive and strong.

Baile folklórico was popularized and (then recognized as a “Mexican Colony”) organized cultural performances and events throughout Omaha.

To this day, baile folklórico is alive and dancing to the beat every year at Cinco de Mayo and all around South Omaha. 💃🏻
