Well folks, you've certainly "urn"'ed this one!
The Williams House, among the rest of the Village's houses and grounds, sure has many wonderful sights that anyone would "kiln" for.
Now isn't that a "crock!"
"Whenever you feel inclined to cry, just change your mind and laugh."
-New York Ledger, New York, NY, 25 July 1863, page 3
157 years later and these guys are still laughing at our Blacksmithing Puns!
Believe it or not, puns did actually exist in the 19th century and prior, though they wouldn't General Lee be as humorous today.
It's a good thing a Blacksmith hits an anvil and not the other way around. Wouldn't that be "irony?"
This Friday, May 15th, at 1pm EST, right here on our page, join us for a brief Live Blacksmithing demonstration! We'll "nail" it!
Don't give us the "coal" shoulder, you won't wanna "bolt" from this one. Trust us, it's not a "forgery," This Live video virtually "hinges" on it!
From all of our Moms to all of yours, we hope that you have a wonderful Mother's Day today!
(Pictured is Catherine, one of the Sisters of Liberty Singers, with her daughter)
Check out our "Bar" Swallows!
We know, we know...you might confuse it with a common Barn Swallow, but after at least 15 years of nesting at John Noon's Inn we think that they've earned this special distinction!
Many people walk by this nest thinking that it is a bee hive, but it is in fact a nest for our resident barn swallows, who usually nest in the late Spring/early Summer here!
Powell Farm Live
Quarantine having you looking for things to do? Have no fear! If in doubt, cupcake it out! Check out this historic cupcake recipe!
“Cup cake is about as good as a pound cake, and is cheaper. One cup butter, two cups sugar, three cups flour and four eggs, well beat together and baked in pans or cups. Bake twenty minutes and no more.”
(our Village Staff suggests baking in your modern oven at 350º - 375º for about 25-30 min or until a toothpick comes out clean)
This simple recipe from The American Frugal Housewife (1832) by Lydia Maria Child could also be called a "1-2-3-4 Cake" which makes sense when you look at the ingredients listed.
Historic Factoid: Lydia Maria Child also wrote several novels and poems including "Over the River and Through the Wood" - which was later was set to a tune by an unknown composer!
"Over the river, and through the wood,"
To bake a 19th century cup cake we go... or something like that!
Hey Powell Farm! House it goin'?
Have you HERD? This Friday, May 8th, at 1pm EST will be our second live video!
For this episode we'll hang out with our farmers and get up close with some of our animals.
Don't be sheepish, join in the fun!
ICYMI: This is the broom made during our live stream the other day!
Yes, it stands, just like it should! Very well balanced!
Guess its true what they say about April showers!

Did you know?
Earth Day and Old Bethpage Village Restoration share the same birth year!
Happy 50th Earth Day today!
Throughout the 19th century, people would reuse and recycle almost everything. Many items, foods, clothes, etc. could be utilized in many different ways.
(Some could say that people in the 19th century were celebrating Earth Day before it was cool)
With the sun finally out today, it reminded us that there is nothing quite as bright as the smiles of people having fun!
We like to have our fun dancing traditional Contra Dances of the 19th century! #museumsunshine
We hope that you have been doing new and fun things to stay positive during these trying times. And if you're out in the workforce, thank you so very much for keeping us afloat!
Hoping to see you all soon. #staysafe #obvr #oldbethpage #oldbethpagevillage #oldbethpagevillagerestoration #longisland #history #museum #historymuseum
Does this weekends rain have you stuck inside?
Try checking out some of these 19th century themed movies/tv shows or books by these historic authors as selected by some of our staff!
Important: Please note that while these movies and television shows may be themed, and inspired by real events, the film industry certainly takes their liberties, and they may not be the most accurate. Merely, they are enjoyed for their entertainment value, inspiration, and for giving our staff the desire to conduct more research based their topics. We hope they inspire you to do more research on their topics yourself!
If your trying to watch some of these with your family, please make sure to check out their rating before doing so.
What or who are some of your favorites?
Unfortunately, due to current conditions across the nation and the world, we have decided to push back our 2020 opening day to a currently undetermined date. While this decision does come with sadness for us, the health of our visitors, staff, and volunteers is of the utmost importance.
Not all bad news though: two score and ten years ago, Old Bethpage Village Restoration opened to the public! Work has begun, and continues to go on, to make our 50th anniversary year one for the record books!
Many thanks to the countless men and women in the health care professions, first-responders, grocers, and to all of those individuals still working during this difficult time.
Due to the continuing developments regarding the health and safety our visitors, the Gem and Mineral Show presented by the Island Rockhounds, scheduled for March 14 and 15 has been cancelled. We will update if the event gets rescheduled.
The Long Island Fair
Happy 288th birthday to our original Commander in Chief, George Washington!
This 1993 photo shows our Hempstead Light Guard Militia celebrating the birth of our first President.
Great things in the works for our 50th Anniversary season!
We've been seeing a lot on Facebook about brooms standing on their own. Just wanted to say that any well made broom should be able to stand on the head of it's bristles, regardless if it is a flat broom or round broom.
Visit us in the Spring and see for yourself!
