CASTOMANIAC is on until Sat 10 Oct!
Open 10am-6pm

This is the outcome of the City Gallery Wellington education team’s coordination of hundreds of young Wellington artists from Northland, Te Aro, Holy Cross, St Patrick’s Primary and Lyall Bay Schools.

CASTOMANIAC is their outreach programme for the Cornelia Parker exhibition opening in the refurbished City Gallery this Friday.

By collecting small objects that are significant to them, the pupils considered the material, economic, psychic and spiritual histories of their objects to create their own unique works.

Also see CASTOMANIAC at Artists 24.7 Gallery, 247 Riddiford Street Newtown. Pupils of Northland School have filled this gallery with artworks that investigate the core concepts of destruction and reconstruction, and how these can transform everyday objects.

Join Gill and Jania for an Artists’ talk on Sunday 4 October 1pm about their exhibition Resonate.

This is Jania and Gill’s third show together and exploring expressive, abstracted New Zealand landscapes (acrylic and oil on board).

Gill’s words about Jania’s paintings:
This is what I see and feel when I look at Jania’s paintings:
* Summer: light filled, shimmering heat, landscapes my eyes rest on and in
* Ripples, resonance: with childhood summers by the river, lying propped on one elbow, shading my eyes for the long view, being there
* Colour: suffused with light, many layered, delicate and peaceful.
Jania’s words about Gill’s paintings:
Gill’s landscape paintings are driven by a dynamic energy—every line is full of movement, ensuring nothing feels static as the viewer’s eye continually moves across each detail. Guided by the rich greens and deep browns of her palette, her work captures familiar vistas from around the greater Wellington region. The lively line work keeps the eye actively engaged, deciphering organic shapes and recognizable local landmarks. Grounded in a warm familiarity, these pieces evoke a subtle nostalgia, connecting her contemporary view with the classic tradition of New Zealand landscape painters of the past.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Thank you to everyone for coming to the opening of “the lie of the land” by Eliza Pudney and Marama Groot.

This exhibition is for their Massey University School of Art – Whiti o Rehua Exhibition Paper.

Visit Marama and Eliza in the gallery 11am to 3pm Friday 19, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September.

Having both grown up in rural Aotearoa, Eliza and Marama see ‘nature’ as a part of everyday life, not a distant spectacle of scenery. Through painting and sculpture, they criticise the historical colonial perspectives that shape the perception of land in Aotearoa. Western thought separates wilderness and civilization, nature from culture, human from animal, as if these separations exist at all. Conservation reflects this logic too, wilderness as being something fenced off and protected from human presence, as if they exist outside this ecology rather than within it. A coloniser’s worldview relies on this fabricated sense of superiority.

Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate the opening of Yasmin Dubrau’s Double Vision!

Double Visions is on until Sunday 6 September.
Visit Yasmin in the gallery Wednesday to Sunday 11am-3pm.

Join us for an artist talk on on Saturday 5 September 11am

Double Vision is an exploration of boundaries, vision and multiplicities. Executed in paper and watercolour, this is a delightfully fresh show of paintings using mark making that plays both freely and formally. The show delivers the works as a journey of emerging practice and ideas, using installation to blur the boundaries between the 2 and 3 dimensional.

Artist bio:
Yasmin Dubrau is a multidisciplinary artist. Her painting practice is primarily based in paper, regularly with watercolours and oil pastels and often incorporating installations. She also works with other mediums such as weaving and ceramics. Yasmin studied painting at Unitec in 2005 before moving to Japan where she lived for 5 years. Recently she has returned from an artist residency in Longquan, China where she spent 3 months making ceramics with traditional celadon glzes. She currently lives in Heretaunga/ Hastings where she lives with her partner and her dog.

Looking forward to seeing you there.
