🎃 HAPPY HALLOWEEN 🎃

This year we want to celebrate with Solage Knopf’s meticulous and surrealist spirit drawings. Her works consist of elaborate depictions of surreal figures, faces, creatures, plants with eyes, circles, and nature motifs. Knopf diligently explores the shapes and colors of these objects until there is no more room on the page. Many of her drawings depict worlds she saw in dreams or visions, like all the works pictured above.

We hope you have a fun, spooky, and safe night! 💜

With our nearly sold out workshop this coming Saturday, we have cyanotypes on our mind! 💙🦋

Lia Halloran created a body of work titled “Your Body is a Space That Sees”, which consists of large-scale cyanotype prints and their corresponding negatives, which Halloran made by painting ink on large sheets of translucent film.

This work highlights the achievements of a group of lesser-known women scientists that worked at Harvard from the late 19th - early 20th century, who established a classification system for stars. To confront this erasure in scientific history, Halloran created a print and negative for each scientist in the “Harvard Computers” showcasing stars and star clusters that we would have never known existed if not for this group of women.

John Grade
“Reservoir”

Situated in a clearing within an Italian forest, John Grade’s installation, Reservoir, appears like a chandelier glistening among the pine trees. is featured in the Arte Sella Sculpture Park in Borgo Valsugana and is made up of five thousand clear droplets each of which is delicately attached to translucent nets, supported by tree trunks.

On designing Reservoir, Grade studied the Park’s ecosystem, carefully planning the installation in harmony with the surrounding landscape. “I became most interested in the way rain falls through this grove of trees, the canopy delaying the droplet’s journey to the ground as well as how quiet and sheltered the forest was during a heavy rain. I wanted to make a sculpture that responded to the rain directly as well as a sculpture that responded to people.”

Reservoir is constructed from heat-formed plastic parts framed with steam-bent strips of Alaskan yellow cedar. Each droplet is attached to marine nets with fishing line which are then incorporated with stainless steel rings to maintain tensions and support the tree trunks above the structure. The shape of the translucent droplets are formed from casts of human hands cupped together. “We cast ten different people’s hands for variations in scale,” Grade explains.
When rain falls or snow lands the water accumulates within Reservoir’s clear pouches, giving them their droplet-like shape. In doing slow, the installation gets heavier and lowers, while in sunny, warm weather, it rises back into its original structure as the liquid evaporates. “The sculpture rises and falls with precipitation differently each time it rains or snows”. . Springs below the installation limit the vertical range of movement, so Reservoir always remains 10 feet above the forest floor.

Artist spotlight: Howard Hersh

The San Fransisco-based artist utilizes material, paint, and line to create works by manipulating a geometrical grid and incorporating spatial and optical illusions. Hersh was lucky enough to grow up in Los Angeles in the 1960’s, where the environment and culture allowed for him to freely experiment with his artwork. His early interest in architecture is evident in the shaped wooden panels he fabricates to give the pieces an extra element of dimensionality as they curve off the wall.  Finding that balance between traditional ideas of geometry and contemporary forms, Hersh has created a body of work that spans over 25 years.

Fun fact: Howard and Jeannie have known each other and traveled within similar art circles for 20+ years. It’s been great to reconnect through some recent Bay Area studio visits and begin working together in 2024. Tipping Point 24-5,6 was delivered and installed in our new annex space last week. If you’re in the area- be sure to stop by and check it out in person!

Marietta Patricia Leis’ art is concerned with the preservation of our planet. Her art, regardless of medium, resonates with the beauty of our natural environment. Reveal, originally inspired by the idea of the Earth being excavated with impending danger to the planet’s future, was made during the first year of Covid. Red Stafk, 2022

Shaikha Al Mazrou is considered to be among the most dynamic and promising artists of her generation from the UAE. Her sculptural experimentations and investigations are expressions of materiality—articulations of tension and the interplay between form and content as well as an intuitive, keenly felt understanding of materials and their physical properties. She combines and evolves ideas from contemporary artistic movements similarly preoccupied with formal and material elements, from colour theory to geometric abstraction.

Artist spotlight: Victor Hugo Zayas

The work of Victor Hugo Zayas is first and foremost about the act of making and transcending traditional subject matter to explore through a contemporary lens. Zayas views his works as a celebration of the act of painting itself, emphasizing his relationship with paint and the importance of materiality. With a background in sculpting, he approaches his work through a three-dimensional lens, constantly experimenting and evolving his style. Gregorio Luke, an expert on Mexican and Latin American art, described Zayas’s work as a “synthesis of many styles, including modern, expressionistic, abstract, and figurative. He uses a great variety of materials: oil, sculpture, watercolors, paper, even ink on napkins. He paints in bold brush strokes- creating deep, lush surfaces”

Artist Spotlight
Karen Thayer

Artist Karen Thayer explores ceramic processes, using earth materials and minerals to create unique interpretations of landscape and geologies described by her as “reductive fiction, or physical poems”. She is a keen observer of the physical world, allured by its forms, structures and organization. Her first awareness of this fascination came from the aerial perspective of flying in her father’s small plane as a child. This curiosity deepened further after the Eames film, Powers of Ten, gave her an even larger opening to imagine worlds both micro and macro. Geologic events, along with time, combined with overlays of human activity mark the earth’s surface.

Karen Thayer is a Southern California native, has traveled the US extensively, receiving degrees from Syracuse University and Ohio State University. She has exhibited and taught ceramics for over 35 years but is currently enjoying retirement, allowing her more travel and studio time.

A central figure in the California Lifht and Space movement, Laddie John Dill has been crafting light and earthy materials like concrete, glass, sand, and metal into luminous sculptures, wall pieces, and installations since the 1970’s.

The artist’s dedicated interest in light manipulation is apparent in his reflective wall sculptures made from laminated sheets of aircraft-quality aluminum. Each two-dimensional metal plane in the Light Trap series is polished and ground to a high shine, trapping and releasing light from surrounding sources to create three-dimensional optical effects.

Erwin Wurm

For over three decades Wurm has challenged the rules of sculpture, the limitations of the human body, and its relationship to the spaces we inhabit. His work disrupts perceptions of the familiar and sensible and in a process that abounds with humour and experimentation, he frequently reimagines commonplace objects by giving them human characteristics.

Artist Spotlight: Raul de la Torre

Born in Barcelona, Raul de la Torre moved to Los Angeles in 2003. His art fuses traditional abstract forms with culturally charged materials and references.

He himself explains his process by saying, “The last 10 years my works have become a mix of acrylic and handmade embroidery. I first choose the colors I want to incorporate in the palette of the work I’m about to embark upon. To me, the colors represent people, moments or feelings. Sometimes I contain the paint within a clean border, other times I let the blocks of color drip down the canvas or paper. Next, I begin the process of embroidery. I make horizontal cuts on the canvas or paper and covers these open areas using cotton thread. my technique of embroidery is heartfelt exploration. Just as a poet builds words to form metaphor or meaning, I build texture through embroidery to form depth and character.”

Artist Spotlight
Brad Durham

“Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes... Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite.”
-Arshile Gorky

We have had the pleasure of watching Brad Durham’s painting career evolve thoughtfully and intently over several decades. Whether painting elegant representations of nature (early career) or expressive abstractions (current), he continues a dialogue between concepts of the sacred (geometry) and the corporal (landscape). Ever evolving, Durhams’ paintings have become increasingly more abstract , investigating the relationship between objects and the space between them. His paintings are poetic and evocative. They invite a contemplative response, engaging us visually and emotionally; and for some, spiritually as well. We are pleased to be exhibiting a collection of his reductive abstractions beginning next week (some of which are featured in this post).

We are pleased to share that we have received five new paintings from Clark Walding’s Evanescence series. We invite you to experience the subtleties and magnetic prescience of these paintings in person. As one write so eloquently expressed: “As you sink into these paintings - they, in turn, sink into you.”

The paintings of Clark Walding encourage contemplation and careful perusal. The often muted and subtle color has a matter-of-fact presence that is direct in ex*****on and develops a quiet surface tension as the work emerges with a full sense of experience.

Artist Spotlight: Woods Davy

Davy has worked with stones, in natural unaltered states, collected from the sea or the earth and has assembled them into a fluid and precarious balance that defies gravity and denies their material identity for over 40 years. In one series, the “Cantamar” series, Davy carefully selected stones that have been rounded and smoothed by the tumbling effects of the Pacific, at a beach in Mexico by that name. Davy’s sculptural combinations of these stones create cantilevered arcs which appear weightless, floating like clouds or rolling like the waves that shaped them.

Fun Fact:  One of Woods drawings will be included in an upcoming Hammer Museum exhibition titled Out of the Ordinary: Uncommon Materials, Marks, and Matrices (Dec. 21, 2024 to April 6, 2025). The show will be largely drawn from the museum’s collection of works on paper, and it will explore the meanings and techniques behind artists’ use of unusual printing or drawing materials.

Carin Gerard
Fantasy by Nature
Oil on canvas
60”W X 60”H

Gerard’s most recent paintings elicit feelings of transformation by emphasizing the dramatic interplay of light and shadow. She drew inspiration from author Elise Loehnen, who explored the etymological root of “realize”: real eyes. To make something real is to bring it into existence, to turn our eyes toward it and shed light on it.

This new painting is an expansion of her typical creative methodology: multiple flowers are manipulated and photographed to form the composition, with a multicolored imprimatura, followed by text written in wet paint to accentuate the textured surface. In addition to her mother’s poetry, Gerard uses culturally relevant text from AI and other sources to illustrate the interplay of dark and light, pain and joy, unresolved passions and fulfilled dreams. The words are not a literal expression of sentiment; sometimes they are visible and legible, though often they are imperceptible.

“I like this idea of showing that there is something invisible to be found in the visible. I like to awaken the joy of thinking about possibilities, about what might be.

What I’m most interested in is order and chaos. The visible and invisible. The material and immaterial. And I don’t see them as contradictions. They’re like poles that are in everything. I like moments of amazement and irritation. On the whole when we look, we don’t see. We wander in a sort of monologue with ourselves. This irritation and amazement shake us out of this mental drowsiness.”

In loving memory of G. Ray Kerciu
1933 - 2024

For over seven decades, G. Ray Kerciu forged a legacy as a painter, sculptor, social observer, professor, and civil rights activist. Kerciu lived and worked in our coastal art community for more than a half a century. G. Ray was a treasured friend, artist, teacher, and mentor to so many. His vibrant presence will
be sorely missed.

“In one of the stars I shall be living.
In one of them I shall be laughing.
And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing,
when you look at the sky at night

…There is sweetness
In the laughter of all the stars
and in the memories of those we love.”
