Looking for volunteers at the Newfield museum. We have been trying to get the museum back in order after the winter. Need some leaf rakers and some painters. Also, looking for some college students on semester break or others for paid, seasonal costumed interpreter to work with our school field trip program and, perhaps, hours from June to October. References needed. Must have your own transportation. Might be closely located. 🙂Give us a call at 207-205-4849.

Notice the early radio set up on the tail gate of the chuck wagon. This was an apparently unnoticed detail in an Archeaology magazine postiing identifying the scene as early 20th century. What is likely a tube radio setup would have to be at least mid 20s to early 30s for this set up We will have some interesting radios at the Maine Science Festival on March 15 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

News coverage about Newfield.

NEWFIELD — On a late winter morning in the quiet village of Newfield, at Curran Homestead, formerly known as Willowbrook, young people engaged in an activity that could have easily taken place 100 years, or 200 years earlier. They cleaned and carded large pelts of Shetland fleece, spun it with dro...

I may add that Curran Village at Newfield has quite a collection of Victorian era fans of its own that were donated within the last couple of years by Charles Anthony of Lebanon, ME from his late wife's collection. We have some volunteers who have agreed to help with the creation of a new Victorian clothing exhibit that includes some these fans in the ballroom above the Amos Straw Country Store at Newfield in 2019. We need some volunteers (with brawn) to help move some exhibition cases from point A to point B this winter or in the early spring for this purpose. Please let me know if you can help and we'll set a date. One of the cases was donated by the Brewer [ME] Historical Society and will be shuttled down to Newfield soon. Bob @ 207-205-4849.

Here's a lovely brisé fan. It's American made from the 1820-1830s, with paint horn ribs and silk ribbon. Brisé fans were made from sticks with no fan leaves and had their blades connected by a ribbon threaded through the top. The earliest of these fans seen in Europe came from China or Japan in the seventeenth century and were popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century but never as popular as folding fans.

The color never disappoints around Curran Homestead Village at Newfield -formerly Willowbrook. I always enjoy passing through the area this time of year to keep tabs on the foliage... especially those maple trees in the neighborhood!

Some barn cleaning.

We started clearing out the main Curran barn this week with help from board members Dick Hanson and Nate Coe! Nate is our newest addition to our board. The plan is to move the contents of the barn and ell into two 53 foot trailers lent to us by Maine Trailers. We need to address framing issues on the barn and ell, replace some floor joists and the flooring so that we have a floor safe for walking visitors. We plan to utilize these structures for programming rather than as solely a storehouse as they have become with much accumulation. We can use some helping hands. We'll resume work on this project this Saturday starting at 9AM.
