On view now in the front gallery. Catherine Haggarty’s Just Drawing is composed of twelve recent drawings that surround two vitrines. Just Drawing showcases innate references to memory, grief and iconography. Objects are anchored by their positions in space, calling attention to the ground and surfaces around them – an ode to craftsmanship and the hand, inviting viewers to consider shared and individual memories of home.

Using wax crayon, colored pencil and acrylic airbrush on toned paper, Haggarty explores domestic and surreal spaces. Repetition is abound – feline imagery couples with references spanning art history and delve into tropes and techniques that remain consistent in her practice. She has built up a language of symbols that is mysterious and intriguing. The work has a unique surface quality; beautiful gradients and lines of saturated colors create a hypnotic response from the viewer, playing with scale and perspective.

Just Drawing pays homage to the small, thoughtful details of the everyday and heightens these objects to a celestial state.

On view through July 28, 2024.

Catherine writes: “The exhibition ‘Just Drawing’ shows 14 framed drawings and about 12 drawings under glass table vitrines. I think, teach and talk often about drawing - so it feels appropriate to finally have an exhibition focusing on this medium & process alone. I have had countless conversations with artists who mention a work as ‘Just a drawing’... I’ve always thought it curious and not really representative of the power of drawing.”

Opening this Saturday, June 8! Just Drawing, a solo show by Catherine Haggarty features recent works on paper. A formal opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 15 from 3-5p. We hope to see you there!

“Curtains divide space, but in a thin and often surface level kind of way. If you’ve spent time in a hospital you can’t not study them. Curtains and folds are a mechanism for light, shape, form… a substrate in which to deal with subjectivity, and then they are their OWN subject of course. . . Most of my work is a combination of observed and conjured forms and processes. I like it this way because Life works that way; we try to see deeply and then… in an instant a memory finds its way in and we are in between worlds. Remembering, imagining… trying desperately to stay present.”

ransome’s abstract works utilize narratives that are personal, yet contain symbols that interplay with larger social, racial, ancestral, economic and political histories that speak to current issues. Each piece in The Bitter and the Sweet is imbued with lyrical yet authentic reverberations of resilience, limited resources, and frugality; exploring the struggle and hope, pain, joy, and soul of folks in the Black community.

Centering our solo exhibition with ransome, The Bitter and the Sweet, is ’s installation, Shotgun House, featuring the migration story of a community in Albany, New York known as Rapp Road, established in the 1920s by Rev. Louis W. Parson. Rev. Parson moved to the north from rural Mississippi with his wife during the Great Migration, followed by other members of his congregation. The community eventually moved outside of the city and bought land along Rapp Road. Four folks from this community are featured in a video through the small windows in Shotgun House, while the other two windows display patterns that are a part of their lives.
