Almost as long as the camera has existed, so has spirit photography. Gaining prominence after the U.S. Civil War, creating ghostly imagery remains a time-honored tradition among photographers with a penchant for the strange.

Visit our booth (D16) at Paris+ par Art Basel to explore historically significant pieces by key 20th century figures, including Pablo Picasso’s "Buste de Femme."

Picasso’s prolific and masterful oeuvre left an indelible mark on the history of art. "Buste de Femme," painted in the early spring of 1967, depicts the artist’s second wife, Jacqueline Roque. The couple were inseparable for two decades until Picasso’s death in 1973. Photographs and personal accounts reflect their deep devotion to one another—indeed, during their time together Picasso painted more than 400 portraits of Jacqueline, his greatest muse.

To learn more about our Paris+ presentation, click the link below, or visit us at booth D16 at Grand Palais Éphémère from October 19 – 23.

This is a gold bulla, an amulet given to Roman boys on their eighth birthday.

Worn around the neck, their purpose is to protect the wear from evil spirits and to proclaim them as freeborn citizens.

This particular bulla is exceptional because it is made of gold, which marked its owner out as a member of the Roman elite: leather, cloth, lead and ceramic were used for the less wealthy.

It was found in Herculaneum, an affluent Roman town that was destroyed, and subsequently preserved by, an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.

Happy birthday to Dorchester native Childe Hassam, who was born in 1859! 🎈

Hassam employed the radical compositional effects that he admired in French painting to portray the changing aspects of Boston. In this work, which depicts the Charles River, Beacon Hill and Back Bay, the artist captured the city of his youth as it was transforming itself into a sophisticated urban center.
