Mission: Museum Tours...for people who don't like museums.

Operating as usual

Black lives matter.

Not just now, or before, but f***ing forever.

As we observe hundreds of years of American history and a civilization-span of human history, a few things are clear.

First, the structural and individual racism that oppresses, imprisons, and murders Black people is very real.

Second, this racism isn’t new. Current events are the direct result of ongoing and racist police brutality, and a predictable outcome of a system that supports white supremacy.

Museum Hack is complicit in this system, for example:

- We have known for years that our hiring practices for guides do not result in diversity. We have not made sufficient effort to correct this.
- We do not provide the training or budget to create racially-inclusive experiences.
- We profit from accessing institutions that are also complicit in the oppression of Black people and culture.
- Our pricing structure makes Museum Hack tours inaccessible to many people.

There are more examples, and we will uncover even more in the months and years to come. We are remiss in not making change a priority earlier, before the eyes of America were focused on these issues.

Here is how we are starting to take action:

- Instead of trying to quickly update broken systems, like recruitment and hiring; we will rebuild these systems from the ground up to support diversity and inclusion.
- Through the end of 2020, we are matching up to $5000 in donations to The National Civil Rights Museum, The National Museum of African American History and Culture, The Museum of African Diaspora, or any other institution with a proven record of accurately depicting Black history. Send your donation receipts to [email protected].
- Before restarting our tour program, we will seek out training for our staff on anti-racism, diversity, inclusion, and historical accuracy.
- We will work with BIPOC advisors for guidance.
- We will use our platform to amplify Black voices.
- We will not be silent.
- We will buy books and other resources from Black-owned businesses.
- We will update our website to support Black Lives Matter.

We will continue to learn and do more.

Black lives matter.

People Don't Want Virtual Museum Tours; Do This Instead - Museum Hack

March was the highest peak for "virtual museum tours" EVER. Followed by an equally rapid decline. There are 3 new trends surging now that museums can serve. Read about it here: https://museumhack.com/virtual-museum-tour-trends/

For a few days in March, 2020, the world focused its attention on virtual museum tours. This attention was driven by museum closures, major media coverage, and a mighty social media effort by museums to offer an online experience to audiences. And then, just as quickly, the attention disappeared and...

How Museum Hack went from $2.8 million per year to zero in 3 days - Museum Hack

Last month we went from 50 tours per week to zero... in 3 days. This is a difficult time for museums, and was a difficult time for our team too. We've started to find our way out of it. Here's the story: https://museumhack.com/three-days/

A few weeks ago we got the first call from a museum partner: they were canceling group gatherings, including all third party tours. Over the next few days, every museum we operate in announced closures. First for a few days, then for a few weeks, and now for at least a few months. At the …

In honor of #InternationalWomensDay2020, check out some of the absolute badass bitches whose stories we love to tell, like Taytu Betel, who, to this day, "remains a linguistic legend in Italy. The phrase “Chi si crede di essere, la regina Taitu?” (“Who does she think she is, the Empress Taytu?”) is still used to describe women who act like they’re above their station."

Read her story and the tales of other incredible women: https://museumhack.com/general/badass-bitches/
