Frederick Douglass. Harriet Tubman. Sojourner Truth. Maria W. Stewart.

Chances are, you spent time in school learning about abolitionism, and you’re familiar with the contributions made by Douglass, Tubman, and Truth.

But what about Maria W. Stewart’s accomplishments?

For this week’s #19forthe19th challenge, the US National Archives is highlighting women abolitionists, and we want to take the time to showcase the largely unheralded contributions of Maria W. Stewart.

Born a free black woman in the early 1800s, Stewart would become the first American woman to speak publicly to a group of both white and black men and women. Stewart lectured about women’s rights, politics, and slavery. She was particularly passionate about the rights of black women.

Here’s the thing -- that was a BFD at the time. Back in the 1830s, women didn’t speak publicly, and they certainly didn’t speak publicly to a room full of men, and they definitely didn’t tell men they needed to do more to make a difference.

But that’s exactly what Stewart dared to do, and ultimately, it ended her speaking career. At an 1833 address to the African Masonic Lodge in Boston, Stewart said African-American men did not have “ambition and requisite courage” and the ensuing outrage, even among allies of her cause, led to Stewart’s retirement from public speaking.

Stewart did not, however, give up the fight to end slavery and improve life for black women in the United States. She also took to the pen to spread her message, writing numerous speeches and pamphlets for William Lloyd Garrison’s The Liberator.

Stewart also believed passionately in education for girls and boys, and taught in schools across the East Coast. By the early 1860s, while living in DC, Stewart created a school for students whose families had escaped slavery.

Maria Stewart died at the age of 76. Perhaps most telling about her legacy was this quote published in her obituary in The People’s Advocate:

“Few, very few know of the remarkable career of this woman whose life has just drawn to a close.”

The Poetess Who Went Toe to Toe With Christopher Columbus - Museum Hack

The US National Archives is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment with the #19forthe19th challenge by telling the stories of women throughout history. Up first, we're showcasing Hidden Heroines, and we'd like to tell you the story of Anacaona, or the poetess who went toe to toe with Christopher Columbus, and whose legacy was erased from your history book.

https://museumhack.com/anacaona/

Time has revealed that Columbus' legacy is one of death and destruction. Now, we say it's time to reveal the legacy of Haitian queen, Anacaona.

Let your Congressional representatives hear your voice!

On Wednesday, the House is expected to consider an historic $8 million increase for the Office of Museum Services. Support for the measure appears weaker in the Senate; that's why it's time to speak with your local representatives if this is important to you.
