The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a nonprofit, educational institution featuring the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine. Through exhibitions, educational programming and the foremost collection of technologically groundbreaking aircraft and vessels, visitors of all ages and abilities are taken on an inter
active journey through history to learn about American innovation and bravery. The Intrepid Museum was founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, now a National Historic Landmark, which served tours of duty in World War II and the Vietnam War, and was a recovery vessel for the Gemini and Mercury space missions. Welcoming over one million visitors annually, the Museum includes the Space Shuttle Pavilion, home to Enterprise, the world’s first space shuttle that paved the way for America’s successful Space Shuttle Program. On display are more than two dozen authentically restored aircraft, including the Lockheed A-12 Blackbird, the world’s fastest military jet and spy plane, and the British Airways Concorde, the fastest commercial aircraft to ever cross the Atlantic Ocean. The Museum also includes the submarine Growler, the only American diesel-powered strategic missile submarine open to the public; the Exploreum Interactive Hall, a fully interactive exhibit space; an 18,000 sq. The mission of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth. The new Intrepid Museum is a unique journey filled with spectacular interactive exhibits and virtual, multi-sensory technology. The Intrepid Museum is a dynamic adventure for visitors of all ages and offers group packages, member benefits, birthday parties, special event packages and educational programs. Corsair is home. On March 18, 1945, 19 U.S. Navy F4U Corsair fighter-bombers flew off USS Intrepid as part of a final push to end the war in the Pacific. While their mission was successful, two aircraft did not return.
Now, nearly 78 years to that date, segments of one of the missing aircraft, found by a fisherman off the coast of Japan in 2006, have made the long journey back to Intrepid. The Museum will debut an exhibition in August with these segments of the Corsair, and will also tell the story of Pilot Loren Isley, who flew that fateful mission.

Working on an aircraft carrier was hazardous duty both in times of war and peace. In its 31 years of active service, 250 of Intrepid’s crewmembers made the ultimate sacrifice.
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the last Intrepid crew member to die in the line of duty, when Richard F. Urban lost his life. We honor all of their memories.

This , we honor the work of women in uniform during World War II and today. During World War II, women answered the call to serve. Hundreds of thousands joined the military, serving as WAVES, WACs, SPARs, WASPs, Marines and nurses. Millions more worked in factories, building ships, planes and other essentials.

During their service on Intrepid, sailors liked to express themselves in unexpected ways, sometimes going to great lengths to decorate their spaces in the ship itself. There are numerous examples of drawings or paintings done by sailors throughout the ship. 🎨

In celebration of Women’s History Month, we are shining the spotlight on NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Astronaut Jessica Watkins. Watkins spoke with us about her experience serving as a mission specialist on NASA’s SpaceX Crew-4 mission to the International Space Station, her role models, and the advice she wishes to impart to young girls.
Career petty officers are the backbone of the Navy. They convey hard-earned wisdom and experience to the next generation of sailors and officers. Otha Lewis arrived on USS Intrepid in 1961 as a young machinist's mate. Two decades later, he retired from the Navy as a chief petty officer.

Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The Intrepid Museum’s Director, Protective Services Cory Cuneo was a first responder and hero that day and his bravery was recognized in The New York Times. He will also speak on a panel at the 9/11 Museum tonight surrounding that anniversary.
Thirty years ago today, Tim Lang was injured in the first attack on the twin towers, an ominous but often overlooked prelude to 9/11. He does not forget.
On this day in 1979, the Intrepid Museum Foundation was created. Real estate developer Zachary Fisher spearheaded an effort to save Intrepid from the scrap yard and form a sea, air and space museum. The Museum opened to the public in 1982.

On this day in 1966, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara announced that Intrepid would be deployed to Vietnam. Due to growing US involvement in the Vietnam War, Intrepid is reassigned from anti-submarine duty in the Atlantic to operating attack aircraft off the coast of Vietnam.
Former Growler crew member Cornelius Brown knew he wanted to become a submariner after reading the Battle Below as a nine-year-old. During his career, he served on five different submarines, including USS Growler from 1958-1960.

Life in Space with NASA Astronaut Jessica Watkins
In April 2022, NASA Astronaut Jessica Watkins launched as a mission specialist on NASA’s SpaceX Crew-4 mission to the International Space Station. During her six-month stay in space, she and her fellow crew members observed geological changes on Earth and conducted a variety of experiments in microgravity, including studying the effects of long-duration spaceflight on humans. Join us for a special conversation between Watkins and former NASA Astronaut Mike Massimino, live from Intrepid Museum’s Kids Week festivities, where they will discuss life in space and what’s next for Watkins as part of the Artemis Team.

A steady stream of love letters traveled between USS Intrepid crew member Wayne Cooper and his fiancé Shirley Simpson. They wrote about their future hopes and doodled about their affection for each other.
Wayne and Shirley were married for 64 years. Sadly, Wayne passed away earlier this year.
In 1944, Harriet Pickens and Frances Wills were sworn into the U.S. Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Service). This moment was a victory for Black community organizers, who had challenged the Navy's ban on Black women in the WAVES. Lieutenant (jg) Pickens and Ensign Wills were the first and only Black women to serve as commissioned officers during World War II.
