Known for lyrical and shapely ceramics, she produced over 100,000 objects including these charming salt and pepper shakers, which are in Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection! Shop the shakers below!
Did you know that Windows Solitaire was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of fame this year? The cards were designed by Susan Kare, who collaborated with Areaware to make this hard copy of the game.
We asked Kare, recipient of the Cooper Hewitt 2019 National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement how the collaboration came into existence.
“Lisa Cheng Smith approached me about collaborating with Areaware in 2014. I was excited because a) I had admired a lot of their artist-designed products and b) I love working off-the-screen with digital design. It’s been a joyful, true collaboration. Our first product was a physical deck based on the Microsoft Solitaire cards I’d designed in 1990 (16-color palette of the time wasn’t an issue with playing cards). I designed two new jokers, and we developed the packaging together incorporating pixel lettering. We’re currently collaborating on an icon blanket.”

Happy #Pride! As we celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, we encourage all to learn more about the brave history of #WorldPride and the countless ways queer designers of the past and today have empowered their communities. QUEER X DESIGN is a great place to start! 🏳️🌈♥️
Organized by decade beginning with Pre-Liberation and then spanning the 1970s through the millennium, QUEER X DESIGN is an empowering, uplifting, and colorful celebration of the hundreds of graphics—from shapes and symbols to flags and iconic posters—that have stood for the powerful and ever-evolving LGBTQIA+ movement over the last five-plus decades. Included in the collection will be everything from Gilbert Baker's original rainbow flag, ACT-UP's "Silence = Death" poster, the AIDS quilt, and Keith Haring's "Heritage of Pride" logo, as well as the original Lavender Menace t-shirt design, logos such as "The Pleasure Chest," protest buttons such as "Anita Bryant Sucks Oranges," and so much more.
Whether it's a fizzy cocktail or sparkling water, #StayHydrated because Cooper Hewitt #Pride Night is here! Tonight, Cooper Hewitt is handing the keys to the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden to Bushwig for a night of DJ sets and performances you won't forget.
Happy 90th birthday to Milton Glaser! The prolific designer has contributed so much to the design community but perhaps none more iconic than the famed "I 🖤 NY" logo.
This poster was originally distributed all over New York by students from the School of Visual Arts, the week of September 11, 2001. People in the streets and on their way to work saw this expression of their deep feeling about the city on every storefront and doorway. The same combination of words and imagery was used as the front and back page of the Daily News on September 19, 2001.
