We are excited to announce that NYSCI has received a federal grant of $4 million from the Education Innovation and Research Program (EIR) of the U.S. Department of Education!

NYSCI was one of only 28 institutions to receive early phase funding through the highly competitive EIR program that received 228 proposals so we are very grateful.
The grant will fund an innovative project titled "Your Light and Air: Leveraging Civic Science to Advance High Need, Grade 6-8 Students’ Science Learning Through Investigations."

Over the course of five years, NYSCI will partner with the American Institutes for Research, New York City Department of Education’s School District #24, Chicago Public Schools, and Participate to develop and rigorously test innovative curriculum units that invite middle grade learners to explore aspects of light and air in their classrooms. In other words, the students get to use STEM to improve the conditions of their own everyday learning environment - our mission in a nutshell!

We look forward to learning from these student scientists as we take notes on how they engage in their classrooms.

Celebrate the holidays the Queens Way: This Saturday, December 23, we are excited to co-host a holiday market pop-up: The NYSCI x Street Vendor Project Holiday Market! Stop by any time from 10am-5pm to pick up unique holiday gifts from around the world from NYC's iconic street vendors and meet Santa 🎅 . AND from 12-3pm, we'll have a DJ spinning fun tunes as well!

What is the Street Vendor Project (SVP)? It's a membership-based organization that champions the rights of street vendors as small businesses to earn a living and contribute to the culture and life of New York City. They strive to expand vending as a viable, lawful employment option for immigrants and other entrepreneurs. They celebrate the long tradition of street vending in NYC and the diversity of cultures and backgrounds from which vendors come, noting that an estimated 95% of street vendors are immigrants who operate at the margins of the formal economy.

Come out to show support, dance, and go home with special gifts!

"Nikon Small World: Recognizing Excellence in Photography Through the Microscope" is on view at NYSCI through February 3, 2024. This exhibition is the premier photomicrography competition in the world, now in its 49th year. Striking images show artistry, scientific acumen, and technical proficiency in regard to images taken through the microscope. In the 2023 competition, some 1,900 photos were submitted from 72 countries and then judged by five experts in both photography and science.

This year's first place winner was Hassanain Qambari and Jayden Dickson from Perth, Australia for the image "Rodent Optic Nerve Head" (pictured here). For the past few years, Qambari has focused his research on diabetic retinopathy – with this image helping to understand the study and reversal of this condition.

"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it." -

At , we know that science isn't *literally* magic but we also know it can feel like it to kids—and adults who want to feel re-inspired. Our iconic exhibition "The Big Bubble Experiment" has returned, enhanced in delightful ways that puts the science of bubbles into your hands and the wonder of magic into your mind.

How does NYSCI empower and excite families about STEM? One way: NYSCI's Family Learning and Community Partnerships team organizes initiatives such as the "Families Learning Together" program, which helps local parents and caregivers become more confident in their role as their children’s first STEM teachers.

Pictured here: The program this summer. NYSCI staff modeled strategies for caregivers and then opened time for discussions on what they think, followed by opportunities for them to then facilitate similar activities with their children using NYSCI resources. 44 participants attended and the program was taught in English and Spanish.

At the end of the program, each family received a STEM Backpack Toolkit - a backpack filled with science tools and suggested activities that families can do independently. The Backpack Toolkit was distributed partway through the course, so that caregivers have a chance to practice using the tools, and then ask NYSCI staff for feedback before the program is over. This approach gives caregivers the figurative and literal tools to continue to foster their children’s STEM interest beyond the duration of the FLT program.

After completing the course and using the toolkit, 94% of parents/caregivers felt more confident supporting their child’s learning. One said, "I would definitely recommend this program because it informs us of different ways we can make our children have interest and focus on what they are doing. It teaches us how we can make enjoyable activities with them with simple tools we have at home."

NYSCI is proud to be part of the Elmhurst Corona Resource Collaborative (ECRC), a group of 25 local organizations working together to support our community. The ECRC was established in May 2020 to meet the needs of the Elmhurst and Corona communities during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. We came together to marshal our collective resources to help families and neighbors heal and rebuild. Now we continue to combine our efforts to positively impact our community over the long-term.

This week, we're spotlighting some of what we've done together in 2023.

5: More than 35 Community Outreach events from baby showers that gave new parents essential items to new books and bags for kids in September to block parties, vaccine events, and much more!

Swifties love STEM too. Youth Band “Music With a Message” played tunes at our most recent teen STEM Night.

We also had a silent dance party, Explainer-led Demos, hands-on activities and visitors from the Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers who brought info on scholarships. All in all, a great way to gain practical knowledge from those who lived it mixed with fun and STEM-spiration.

Mark your calendars for our next STEM Night for Teens: Wednesday, December 13 from 5:30-7pm, “Science of Bubbles.” More info to follow soon! 🫧

New 3D Movie at NYSCI: "Incredible Predators" deconstructs the world of major predators as never before, taking an intimate look at the remarkable strategies they use to succeed. Advanced filming techniques expose the planet’s top predators in extraordinary footage, putting the audience right beside them as they hunt on land, under the sea or in the air.

Far from a film about the kill, instead the audience will be emotionally engaged with the key characters, learning how these supreme species must be at the very peak of performance to have any chance of success. Their backstory will be a key part of the narrative; to understand a cheetah’s dilemma you must meet her hungry cubs.

Top predators occupy an apex position within the habitats they dominate and, alongside dramatic animal behavior, "Incredible Predators" reveals the unique relationship between predators and prey as a fundamental building block of ecology.

Screening each day we are open at 11:30, 1:30, and 3:30.
