“Eternal Threads” ARTIST SPOTLIGHT ♟️: Deona Lizette (@)

“Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Deona Lizette has earned her BFA at Kennesaw State University and MFA at Pratt Institute. Deona’s use of wood stems from her childhood woodworking in her grandfather’s shop. Materiality is a central subject of Deona’s practice, with roots in her experience in woodworking, painting, and drawing. By combining painting and printing to create illusory, multidimensional spaces and geometric, abstract figures, Deona both embraces and rejects traditional notions of trompe l’oeil. In its geometric form or absence, the human body often plays a crucial role in Deona’s work. Bold shapes and patterns reference architecture and interior design, art forms that revolve around an anticipation of human presence and bodily interaction. “

The Bishop Gallery is excited to invite you to Eternal Threads, a compelling new group exhibition featuring the works of four dynamic women artists—Deona Lizette, Sharon Walters, Murjoni Merriweather, and Quiana Parks. Opening on March 22nd, 2025, this exhibition unravels themes of memory, identity, and materiality through painting, sculpture, and mixed media.

Opening Reception: March 22nd, 6-9 PM
Exhibition Dates: March 22nd, 2025 - April 26th, 2025
Location: 630 Flushing Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11206

“Eternal Threads” ARTIST SPOTLIGHT ♟️: Murjoni Merriweather ()

“As a black woman artist from Maryland, Murjoni Merriweather has found that the best way to create and talk about black culture is through art, especially claywork. As a student from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Murjoni creates sculpted beings that are based around real people and real experiences. Her work addresses and eliminates stereotypes through clay portraits and video work. With this, she enjoys going against the European standards of “beauty” that are placed upon people of color. (light skin, petite figure, etc.), and normalizing what is natural about black bodies; loving and accepting them as they come. “

The Bishop Gallery is proud to present Eternal Threads, an evocative group exhibition showcasing four dynamic women artists—Deona Lizette, Murjoni Merriweather, Quiana Parks and Sharon Walters. Through painting, sculpture, and mixed media, these artists explore the intricate connections between memory, identity, and materiality. Their works challenge perceptions, reclaim narratives, and weave together personal and collective histories.

From Lizette’s geometric illusions to Merriweather’s powerful sculptural representations of Black identity, Eternal Threads invites viewers to reflect on the forces that shape who we are and how we remember. Walters’ intricate collages, and Parks’ vibrant compositions collectively create a tapestry of artistic storytelling that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Join us for an inspiring evening at the opening reception March 22, 6-9pm, and don’t miss the panel discussion on April 19, where the artists will delve into the themes that connect their work.

Inspired by Jacob Lawrence Migration Series, “Exodus”documents the contemporary theme of black people leaving America due to political and social deterioration. This romantic landscape setting depicts a black family unit moving their belongings into a uhaul van in front of a sun rising or setting. The scene is depicted with full mixed media collage playing with expressionism, figurative abstraction, and pop art. The piece also features collected soil from gentrified Maryland land, further focusing on the relationship between the figure and the land of America, as well as earth. The theme of the work is “because of constant human migration, one can never just look at the current occupancies as original inhabitants. Black people have and always will be constantly migrating around the globe in reaction to climate of environment . The pursuit of happiness manifested .” - Jabari Jefferson

The “Exodus” painting is currently on view thru December 2025 at The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum as part of Jefferson’s solo museum exhibition “Sacred Spaces”.

Join us tomorrow from 3-6pm for a meet and greet with treats with rock sculptor artist Ken Hiratsuka.

Internationally acclaimed for his mastery of stone carving, Hiratsuka’s work is defined by a single continuous line, which he uses to etch mesmerizing patterns into stone. His art bridges the ancient and modern, creating a deep connection to nature that reflects both the timelessness and fragility of the natural world. Rooted in the graffiti and street art movement of 1980s New York, Hiratsuka was a pivotal figure in the East Village art scene and exhibited alongside legends like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Richard Hambleton. His public sculptures still remain on the streets of New York City, a testament to his lasting impact on urban art. Over time, his practice has evolved to include large, often monumental size works more integrated with nature, often carved in situ with the collaboration of the local culture, reflecting his desire that his art crosses the boundaries of language and nations.

Ken’s work is currently part of the two artist exhibition Red Rock - on view thru Jan. 25, 2025.

Extremely proud to be part of Miami 2024 and to feature multidisciplinary artist . Quiana is Scope’s 2024 artist in residence and in addition to her live dj mixes, she will have a solo presentation in booth C15.

Quiana Parks (b. 1986, Paterson NJ, works in Brooklyn, NY) is a multifaceted artist and DJ who infuses her
work with the vibrant culture and spirit of her hometown, Paterson, New Jersey. Her artistic creations are characterized by a dynamic blend of oil pigment sticks, charcoal, and pencil on paper and canvas,
showcasing her signature approach to mixed media on paper and wood. Parks‘ art is a vivid tapestry of bold
hues and intricate patterns, reflecting the rich complexity of her African American and Jamaican heritage. The expressive eyes and cultural symbols adorning the characters in her work capture moments of joy, struggle, and resilience, offering a window into her personal narrative.

The title of the show “The Stars Are Aligned / The Time Is Now” speaks more to the time at hand and the readiness for the world to witness voices in contemporary art outside of cities with infrastructure most known for building artists’ careers.
