The goals of the gallery are to present significant innovative and intellectually challenging work in the fields of art, architecture, fashion, and design from around the world and to provide a range of educational initiatives to help viewers relate con

temporary art to their lives in a meaningful way. It is located on 144 West 14th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues in Chelsea and gallery hours are Monday – Saturday, 11am-6 pm, Thursday until 8pm. Phone 212.647.7778

The Rubelle and Norman Schafler Gallery:
The Schafler Gallery presents exhibitions by Pratt Institute faculty, students, and alumni from all departments. The gallery favors cross-disciplinary topics that reveal how ideas and issues affect our lives from many different perspectives, and provides an open forum for the presentation and discussion of contemporary culture. The Schafler Gallery is located on the first floor of the Chemistry Building on Pratt’s Brooklyn Campus and is open Monday – Friday, 9am – 4pm.

Please join us tonight for “Ancient Materials, New Forms,” a panel discussion on contemporary textile art! Presented in conjunction with “RugLife,” this talk will feature , artist and Pratt professor; , PhD candidate and former Curator of Contemporary Art at The Textile Museum; and Karyn Zieve, Assistant Dean of and faculty member in the History of Art & Design program. As the exhibition “RugLife” comes to its last couple of weeks, please join us on Wednesday, May 13, for a panel discussion between Johannah Herr, artist and Pratt adjunct professor, whose work is represented in the exhibition; Caroline Kipp, artist, PhD candidate and former Curator of Contemporary Art at The Textile Museum; and moderator, Karyn Zieve, Assistant Dean of Pratt’s School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and faculty member in the History of Art and Design. The discussion will range over topics raised by the exhibition from the language of textiles and pattern to the shifting roles of cultural, political and spatial contexts.

This special event will also include a guided walk-through of the exhibition with all three panelists. This event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited so please use the link in our bio to RSVP.

At “RugLife,” engagement doesn’t end with viewing. Through writing, visitors translate texture into memory, emotion into language.

Each card reflects a different way of connecting to material, to personal experience, to something remembered or imagined.

Taken together, these fragments form a living record of how the exhibition is felt.

During the opening of RugLife, visitors engaged with the exhibition in different ways — exploring artworks, sharing responses, and interacting with the Learning Center.

At first glance, the colors feel playful. Look closer.

In “War Rug III (El Paso Shooting)” and “War Rug IV (Las Vegas Shooting)” [both 2020], transforms a traditional rug format into a reflection on violence, memory, and how tragedy becomes woven into everyday life.
