More And More Thoughts About Other Thoughts

Driton Selmani
Curated by Lora Sariaslan

26 September—19 October 2019 U10, Belgrade

The solo exhibition of the multivalent Kosovo-born and based artist Driton Selmani (b. 1987) focuses on the dominant role of humor, questioning its capacity as a tool to magnify the meaning of the (un) familiar. Elemental, human, and yet at times difficult to analyze, humor is an entry point into diverse cultures and a strategy to survive within it. We see how in Selmani’s work humor works as a captivating mode of expression, transitional and (trans) national cultural product, and topic for discussion, despite its levity. In spite of its ‘lightness’ humor is indeed a complex topic, and this exhibition presents it as a means of identity negotiations and queries how humor shapes the artistic language and production of Selmani. What makes humor active is that it is not a one-sided action, but a dialogue not only initiated by (in this case) the artist but also relies on the viewer, resulting (in successful examples) in an active, immersive, and provocative dialogue and discourse. What Selmani does is to create an engaged and engaging dialogue. #contemporaryart #dritonselmani #Kosovo #Artist

Arbëreshë - Albanian Institute New York

Join us for an intimate talk with one of the foremost Arbëreshë professor Francesco Altimari, professor of Albanology at the Università della Calabria who will deliver a lecture on Arbëreshë's peculiar culture, their unique language, art, customs, and traditions — a discussion of Arbëreshë extraordinary history and heritage.

The talk is followed by a live music performance by Peppa Marriti Band, on stage for the first time in the United States!

The event is co-hosted by Albanian Institute and NYU Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò, organized in collaboration with Prof. Giovanni Braico (NYU).

The Arbëreshë people, also known as Italo-Albanian or Arbëreshët e Italisë, are the descendants of the Albanian who fled to Italy between the 14th and 18th centuries as a consequence of the Ottoman invasion of the Balkans.

On The Quest For Creative Funding Models And Younger Audiences For Opera And Ballet

"To produce canonical works, the arts require risk-taking and innovation, boundary-pushing and stirring up new ideas."

Brigel Gjoka, renown Albanian dancer & choreographer with Riley Watts during the performance of "A Quiet Evening of Dance" winner of Fedora's Van Cleef and Arpels Prize for Ballet in 2018.

If opera houses and ballet companies only stage shows that were originally conceived in the 1800s, they risk missing out on telling stories of contemporary society. Not only does this keep younger audiences away, but high ticket prices ensure elitist audiences, who are only getting greyer.

Crossing by Pajtim Statovci review – an Albanian odyssey

"An Albanian odyssey ... It is the work of an accomplished novelist."

"Statovci’s brilliance is primarily as an intuitive storyteller...

The brutal beauty of Crossing comes from its almost cellular understanding of belonging and exclusion, love and cruelty. It is a powerful phoenix of a book that rises from the ashes of the previous century. It speaks to the sins of the fathers, which the children must transcend by crossing to the other side – or perish."

EU adopts strategic approach to international cultural relations

Today, very pleased that the EU Council adopted its conclusions on an EU strategic approach to international cultural relations, paving the way for a framework for action.

The Conclusions take stock of synergies between EU and its Members in international cultural relations, such as the launch of the European Houses of Culture to be implemented by EUNIC, the umbrella organization of EU national cultural institutes.

Albanian Institute, the only national cultural institution that is a member of EUNIC, will be part of this project and will continue to use the full potential of culture to strengthen our coordination and strategy on the best way to promote international cultural relations and building a more inclusive and fairer Union — that is what we have been doing since the beginning and it is at the core of our mission.

Also, the photo published by EEAS is from the Castle Gjirokastra, Albania by Blerta Kambo — a good omen :)
