Directed by Daniel Wechsler, this 2012 documentary film surveys the life and practice of Matt Weber, a former taxi driver turned acclaimed street photographer in New York City.

“Reflecting upon photography at the end of the analog age, the film is highlighted by gorgeous 35mm montage sequences set to the music of jazz legend Thelonious Monk. Weber’s extraordinary photographs will resonate long after the film is over.”

With piercing hues and a marriage of be***al and other-worldly imagery, “Feral Moments” explores the human experience in the modern age—an age with an unrelenting inundation of digital imagery and consumer messaging; an age with far too little authentic bonding to others as well as to the natural world.

Through this body of work, the artist illustrates our biological need to reset and restore our fundamental connection to the earth–perhaps appealing to our feral instincts–and a connection to spirituality.“Intentionally intimate in scale, current series reflects the subconscious representation of her momentary psychic state. In her trance states, ideas incubate through light bearing frenetic sketches in the form of automatism. The process of editing thoughts and emotions creatively, is as important as the painting itself. The alchemy of sketch and a fluid transformation of imagery on canvas, evolve into mirages of the mind. These mirages do not exist, therefore giving them license to be playful and whimsical. Simultaneously, they allude to a sinister quirkiness; dark and light: the opposing forces of life.”

Amanda holds an MFA from Pratt Institute, and is based in Brooklyn, New York.

✨TOMORROW, Friday June 14th is the last day to view pieces at Homage! ✨

The work of this brilliant, ever-surprising, and beautifully impulsive multidisciplinary artist and psychoanalyst, Dr. Francesca Schwartz, rests on her fascination with the contents and materials that make up the body.

Initially working in bone, her work has expanded to include paint, wax, metal, found objects and textiles, finding expression in collage and assembled works. Her art-making addresses many of the same questions confronted in her practice, finding meaning through the articulation of the unconscious and the necessary preoccupation with the body, its disappearance, life’s beginnings and death.

She is based in New York City and is open for studio visits! She will regale you with hilarious and captivating narratives about her journey through the art world and the evolution of her practice.

Join us for the closing reception:

Homage Last Look Closing Party this Friday!

Homage features an assemblage of striking works from a diverse group of New York-based artists, including Tom Fruin, Qinza Najm, Abidemi Olowonira, Francesca Schwartz & Ray Smith.

The exhibition explores the vast and varying ways in which we as humans pay homage. Embodying memory, ancestral narratives and mythologies, as well as physical materials as vessels, not only links past and present but refuses to erase our respective histories.

WHEN: Friday, June 14th, 6-9pm

WHERE: .space (150 Centre St., BK off of the F/G line)

🍷by and 🍺will be served

One more week to view Qinza Najm’s newest body of stunning mixed media metal works at Homage!

A multi disciplinary artist who was recently mentioned in the Financial Times for her performance piece at Clio Art Fair, strikingly weaves her cultural heritage and experience from both Pakistan and the US. She is “fascinated by how cultural norms and laws shape our experience of the body as a political subject. My work seeks to explore the nuances of contemporary narratives through the materiality of everyday objects, focusing on the South Asian metal trunk, called "Peyti", as a metaphor for the concepts of migration, displacement, and belonging.”

Qinza’s work happens to hold a special place for me. As a Jewish curator, I initially sought out Qinza for another exhibition in which Jewish and Muslim artists showcase their works side by side with the aim of inciting dialogue surrounding similar diasporic experiences, belonging, and unspoken cultural commonalities.

However, in deliberating on artists for Homage, I realized her practice of utilizing many alternative, some quotidian, materials—those specific to her homeland— was perfect. “I seek to create a space for critical reflection and engagement with questions that affect us all,” Najm says.

Works available to view through June 14th at .space (150 Centre St., BK)
